LJ Movers & Shakers Named
Library Journal has released its list of Movers & Shakers for 2006. This year's honorees include four librarians on staff at institutions in
BCR member states.
- Barbara Brown, outreach coordinator at Pueblo City-County Library (Colorado), was recognized as an Advocate of both libraries and library users. Brown headed up the library's program to increase literacy awareness and access to books in the county's poorest areas.
- Also recognized as an Advocate, Director of the Tuzzy Consortium Library in Barrow (Alaska), David Ongley, has created a library that reflects Inupiat Eskimo culture. He says he considers the Inupiats to be his primary clientele. He founded the Alaska Library Association's Native Issues Round Table and led in the creation of "Culturally Responsive Guidelines for Alaska Public Libraries," considered a model for all public libraries that serve native patrons.
- Community outreach/adult services coordinator at Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (Nevada), Salvador Avila, was recognized as a Community Builder. In Las Vegas, where Latinos account for 20 percent of the population, Avila serves as ambassador for libraries, "translating community needs into library services that affect people's lives."
- Jeannie Dilger-Hill, outreach services manager at King County Library System (Washington) also was honored as a Community Builder. She provides service on wheels with eight bookmobiles that visit 130 nursing homes, senior centers, low-income housing developments, child care centers, rehabilitation centers and hospitals.
