OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging and OCLC Number Expansion
OCLC plans to install the changes for the OCLC Number Expansion on November 12. Beginning on that date, OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging records will contain the OCLC number in the 035 field as well as the 001 field. Also, beginning November 12, uncoded positions in 007 fields will result in fill characters.
The Z39.50 Cataloging Extended Service Definition will be revised in November and will be prepared to handle the nine-digit OCLC numbers with the ocn prefix. Local system vendors have been notified of these changes related to OCLC Number Expansion. Users of Z39.50 cataloging clients should not need to make any changes to them in order to continue to set holdings as they have done in the past.
The documentation at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/z3950/databaseupdate/ will be revised to discuss these changes.
For additional information about OCLC Number Expansion, please see Technical Bulletin 253 at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/worldcat/tb/253/#oclcnumber.
