Currently, BibNote sends an updated MARC record to libraries when an 856 field has been added, changed or deleted in WorldCat. As OCLC continues to implement programs that automate updates to the 856 field and the number of sources for record updates continuously increases, the number of 856 field updates has increased exponentially. As a result, receiving notification of updated 856 fields through BibNote is no longer a feasible solution for libraries. Additionally, as more libraries maintain e-resources at the local level, many no longer need to receive 856 field updates at the master record level.

OCLC staff will continue to look at alternatives to help libraries manage updates to the 856 field.
