OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging Display Holdings Option Coming Soon

On December 9, OCLC expects to install changes which will allow users to display holdings via OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging, in the 948 field of the full bibliographic record.

Users who want to display holdings will need to be able to configure the Element Set Name in their Z39.50 client. Element Set Name FD will display default holdings. Element Set Name FA will display all holdings. There will be a separate 948 field for each holding library. The 948 fields will display alphabetically by the library name.

Subfields in the 948 field will be as follows:

  • Subfield a will contain the ISO country code.
  • Subfield b will contain the U.S. state and Canadian province information. For all other countries the code in this field is not meaningful, so subfield b will not be included.
  • Subfield c will contain the OCLC symbol.
  • Subfield d will contain the library name.

OCLC has advised various local system vendors of this upcoming change.

Watch BCReview for an announcement of successful implementation after December 9.
