OCLC to Conduct Publisher ONIX Metadata Pilot Project

OCLC will conduct a pilot project to explore the capture, use and enhancement of ONIX (ONline Information EXchange) metadata from publishers and vendors in WorldCat. OCLC hopes the pilot will result in ongoing processes for the early addition of new title metadata to WorldCat and enhanced quality and consistency in such metadata.

ONIX is a standard format used by publishers to distribute electronic information about their books to wholesale, e-tail and retail booksellers, other publishers and anyone else involved in the sale of books. ONIX is maintained by the BISAC (Book Industry Standards and Communications) Metadata Committee. For more information, see the Book Industry Study Group Web site.

The pilot, scheduled to begin in January 2008, involves public and academic libraries and a variety of publishers and vendors. Participants will be announced as the project gets under way. Please see OCLC's Next Generation Cataloging Web pages for additional details.
