Proposal to Make MARC 21 Bibliographic Field 440 Obsolete
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has submitted a proposal to make field 440 (Series Statement/Added Entry — Title) obsolete in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format. The proposal is detailed in MARC Discussion Paper No. 2008-DP02.
Proposed practice would be to record the series statement in field 490, and if access to the series is to be provided, the added entry should be recorded in one of the series added entry fields in the 8XX grouping.
The Library of Congress and the Library and Archives Canada serve as the maintenance agency for the MARC 21 formats for bibliographic, authority, holdings, classification and community information data for MARC 21 users and will organize consideration of the proposed change in coding. Information of the maintenance and development of MARC is on the Library of Congress MARC Development Web site.
