Limiting Searches to 'Not Microform' Now Working in OCLC Connexion

OCLC has announced that problems limiting searches to "not microform" in both Connexion interfaces have been corrected. You can now limit searches using the slash qualifier (/nm) or the index label (mf:nmc) or selecting the qualifier from the Microform list in the Keyword/Numeric search area.

Since this problem has been resolved, it will be removed from the known problem lists for both interfaces at:

OCLC Technical Bulletin 253 Now Available

ISBN and OCLC Number Changes

OCLC Technical Bulletin 253, ISBN and OCLC Number Changes, is now available in both HTML and PDF formats, at: www.oclc.org/support/documentation/worldcat/tb/253/default.htm. This Technical Bulletin describes the implications of the following major changes in OCLC bibliographic records and what you need to do to prepare for them:

  • The OCLC implementation of 13-digit ISBNs — The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is currently 10 digits. Starting January 1, 2007, the ISBN will be 13 digits. Some publishers have already switched to the new, longer numbers. After January 1, 2007, all publishers must use them.
  • The expansion of the OCLC WorldCat record control number from eight to nine digits — Currently, the OCLC control number is a fixed-length, eight-digit number. However, OCLC will soon reach the last eight-digit number. On November 12, 2006, WorldCat records will be able to have nine-digit OCLC numbers. The 100 millionth WorldCat record will be the first nine-digit number.

BCR at the Idaho Library Association Annual Conference

BCR is sending Michael Sauers (msauers@bcr.org), BCR Internet trainer, to the Idaho Library Association Annual Conference, scheduled for October 4-7, in Moscow. He is presenting two programs related to the increasingly complex and fast-changing world of the Internet.

On Tuesday, October 5, from 10-11 a.m., he takes a look at "Firefox Search Plug-ins." He will walk you through the creation of a search plugin that, once installed, will allow your patrons to search your OPAC from within Firefox without having to access the library’s Web site first. He will also examine the Firefox browser built-in search bar that allows users to search such databases as Google, Amazon.com and Wikipedia, as well as create customized searches that can be added to Firefox.

The second program, "Tech Terms: What’s New, What’s Hot and What You’ve Got to Know," explains podcasting, phishing and malware, Wikis, RSS feeds and BitTorrent, topics that if you haven't heard about them from your patrons, you soon will. Get up early to attend this presentation, scheduled for 8:30-9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 6, and you will learn the "techie" language that will make you more comfortable talking with your patrons about their technology needs.

Finally, don't forget to visit Sauers at BCR's exhibit booth. He would enjoy the opportunity to talk with you and your fellow librarians about Internet training and access, including the new WebLive and Free Friday Forum workshop sessions; training and support for OCLC services and products; reference databases; custom cataloging; and the many discounts available for most BCR services.

Increase Access to Your Library's eSerials

OCLC recently introduced the new OCLC eSerials Holdings service, an efficient, cost-effective way to add your library’s electronic serials holdings into WorldCat and expose them more widely to your users and staff. The new service can help your ILL staff more efficiently manage requests for electronic serials at no additional charge to your library.

The eSerials Holdings service makes your electronic content more visible and accessible, both to users and to librarians via WorldCat Resource Sharing, OCLC FirstSearch, the new WorldCat search box and the Open WorldCat program.

OCLC has partnered with leading serials management providers EBSCO, Serials Solutions and TDNet to make the process of setting and maintaining holdings for electronic serials in WorldCat as easy and automated as possible. The service is provided at no charge to libraries with holdings in WorldCat, in order to provide more accurate exposure of eSerials holdings.

Whether you work with one of the providers listed above, or submit holdings directly into WorldCat, the service reveals your collection more fully through online search tools and interlibrary loan applications. The eSerials Holdings service effectively helps to bridge the gap between the worlds of print and electronic materials.

To order, learn more about the service or sign up for a live Web session, please visit: www.oclc.org/eserialsholdings/. Questions? Contact BCR's Heather Clark (hclark@bcr.org).

Update on NUCMC Records in OCLC

OCLC staff have restored approximately 16,500 National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC) bibliographic records in WorldCat that had been replaced incorrectly in the recent OCLC reload of records from the Library of Congress. The loading process did not adequately protect records for which the WorldCat version was more recent and more complete than the record as distributed by LC. OCLC will now examine those records to determine the best way to process them while appropriately protecting enhancements already made to the OCLC versions of the records.

BCR/OCLC member libraries that wish to update the NUCMC records in WorldCat that represent their institution's collections may now resume updating those records.

OCLC apologizes for the difficulties and thanks all members for their patience while staff resolved the situation.

BCR Compares WorldCat.org, Open WorldCat, Firstsearch

WorldCat.org is a new discovery interface freely available for Web users to search and access WorldCat bibliographic records. Some libraries have expressed confusion about the difference between the WorldCat.org, Open WorldCat and OCLC FirstSearch services. BCR has developed a chart and visual diagram that may assist in clarifying the differences between the three services.

WebJunction Releases "Trends in E-Learning" Report

Are you interested in learning how library organizations are pursuing e-learning? Do you want to know about the benefits and challenges? Would you like to know who your peers are turning to as they develop e-learning programs for staff training?

WebJunction has released a new report: "Trends in E-Learning for Library Staff: A Summary of Research Findings." This report summarizes the information gathered in a 2005 survey of training and education in library organizations.

WebJunction began offering online courses to the library community in 2003. Recognizing that little data exists about the use of e-learning for staff training and education in library organizations, WebJunction commissioned an independent consultant to investigate the topic. This report is a compilation of key findings from the survey of 651 respondents across the United States.

Nearly 50 percent of library organizations surveyed are already implementing e-learning in some form. The report reveals their views on:

  • Why library organizations purchase or develop e-learning opportunities for their staff members
  • Where library organizations go for advice on e-learning
  • Situations in which e-learning is most effective
  • Course topics of interest
  • How library organizations choose software providers

The report is available for download free of charge at www.webjunction.org/research.

Vietnamese Edition of DDC Launched

A Vietnamese translation of the Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Abridged Edition 14, by the National Library of Vietnam has been released. The new edition was officially launched at a seminar in Hanoi on August 16, at which Assistant Editor Julianne Beall represented the Dewey team. This is the first complete translation of an edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) into Vietnamese.

Phyllis B. Spies, Vice President, Collection Management Services, said, "The Vietnamese edition joins an impressive set of Dewey translations that are available in every official IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) language as well as many others. In Dewey, concepts are represented by Arabic numerals; such language-independent representation facilitates adoption and use of the DDC around the globe."

Translations of the most recent editions of Dewey are available, under way, or under discussion in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.

For more information, contact BCR's Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org).
