Bailey-Hainer Keynote Speaker at ALA RUSA STARS Preconference

Brenda Bailey-Hainer, BCR's executive director, will be one of the featured speakers at the ALA RUSA STARS preconference on June 22. Introducing attendees to the day's topic, "ILL 101: Interlibrary Loan for New Practitioners," Bailey-Hainer will talk about the trends, practices and policies librarians new to resource sharing and interlibrary loan should know. For the day's complete schedule, visit the ALA RUSA STARS Web site.

A second pre-conference, "Yin & Yang: Bringing Balance to Resource Sharing," is scheduled for the same day, but is designed for participants who would benefit from more advanced information and discussion on current resource sharing issues and practices. Tom Delany, RapidILL Team, Colorado State University, will be giving the keynote for this session. Additional information is also available on the ALA RUSA STARS Web page.

Sponsored by OCLC, each preconference session addresses specific issues that are relevant to beginning or advanced resource sharing and ILL staff. Register for either of these sessions online on the ALA Web site.

Reference and Users Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is an organization of reference and information professionals who make the connections between people and the information sources, services and collection materials they need.

Special Workshop for Public Libraries

"Community Leadership...It's not a spectator sport!" is an exciting new workshop being offered through BCR specifically designed for public libraries. Scheduled for Friday, May 4, at the BCR offices, Aurora, Colorado, librarians will have an opportunity to examine the role of the public library as a community anchor as well as discover how library leaders can help make that happen. This special six-hour (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) workshop is geared toward public library trustees, library directors, friends and other library supporters.

Participants will engage in interactive discussions of leadership qualities and responsibilities for effective community leadership, advocacy and support for their organization. Your instructor for the day, Jim Connor, will introduce and help develop skills needed to bring together varied factions in working toward a common goal. He will discuss the tools needed to overcome fears of public speaking as well as how to conduct an effective meeting.

Come and have fun learning together, while sharing with your peers. This is not an "advocacy session." Instead learn how to establish the public library as the most important and vital resource in your community. BAR NONE!

Connor is a second-term public library trustee with the Jefferson County, Colorado, Public Library. He has nearly 40 years in the trenches as a speaker and trainer in community and organization leadership, has presented more than 100 regional workshops in 21 states and has received national recognition for his work with public libraries. Connor currently heads a private consulting service specializing in organization management and community advocacy training, with a focus on board development and advocacy training for public library boards.

Designate Electronic Delivery Address in Admin Module

To further automate the processing of resource sharing requests, users of WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad will have the ability to designate electronic delivery addresses in the WorldCat Services administrative module. These include: Ariel E-mail (MIME), Ariel FTP (IP), Odyssey, Skype, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger.

Copy/Loan Selection Box
A new field on the staff workform also will allow users to manually select whether their request is for a copy or a loan. OCLC's current resource sharing system designates a request for a copy or loan based on the presence or absence of article data in the workform as well as the presence or absence of a due date. With the new field, users will be able to mark this option as a part of their regular workflow. Note: The field is not required, and if a user does not designate a request for a copy or loan, OCLC's resource sharing system will default to the automated method on behalf of the borrower/lender.

OCLC 10-digit to 13-digit ISBN Conversion

OCLC's January 14 system maintenance included changes enabling the index and display of all 10-digit ISBNs in OCLC WorldCat records as both 10-digit and their corresponding 13-digit ISBNs. It is no longer necessary to search 13-digit ISBNs in the Standard Number (sn:) index. All ISBNs may now be searched in the ISBN (bn:) index whether they were initially input as 10-digit or 13-digit records.

Thirteen-digit ISBNs coded with first indicator 3 (for an International Article Number or EAN) in field 024 have not yet been converted, but will be in near the future. Since OCLC's practice from mid-2004 to November 2006 was to store 13-digit ISBNs in field 024 with a first indicator value of 3, records input into WorldCat during that time will still have ISBN-13s in that field. Such records may be retrieved by searching the Standard Number (sn:) index for the 13-digit ISBN.

Warning: In some converted records, ISBNs may be duplicated. That is, some 10- and 13-digit ISBN's may be displayed twice in a bibliographic record. To delete them from the record, you must delete both the 10-digit and 13-digit versions that are duplicated. OCLC is aware of the problem and is correcting the records. The corrections are anticipated to be completed in a few days.
