BCR Workshop Makes News in Idaho

Librarians in Idaho are learning about podcasting and wikis through training provided by BCR and funded by the Gates Foundation. BCR's Shelly Drumm was in Twin Falls on Friday, March 21, teaching a group of librarians the ins and outs of podcasting. The local TV station, KMVT 11, made a tape and posted it on its Web site. Take a look!

Sponsored by the Idaho Commission for Libraries, a series of workshops on podcasting and wikis are being offered throughout Idaho. The sessions focus on new technologies that are being used to download books, audio files, conduct research and obtain information. Friday morning's session examined podcasting and how libraries can provide the services their patrons desire.

Charles Bolles, continuing education consultant for the Idaho Commission for Libraries and former BCR Board of Trustees member, looked in on the training session. He was quoted on air, saying that podcasting is for "...anybody who has a computer, you don't even need an iPod. If the library has a Web site, they can load the audio files." The KMVT reporter noted that with the introduction of these new technologies, it's easier than ever for libraries to provide services to just about anyone, including teenagers and college students, the visually impaired and families.

For information on learning opportunities around the BCR region, please contact BCR's Regan Harper (rharper@bcr.org), manager, Training & OCLC Services, or visit the BCR training pages for a current schedule of online and classroom workshops.

Visit BCR at April Library Conferences

The month of April continues a busy library conference season in which library associations will convene in Kansas, Washington, Oregon and Montana. BCR staff members are looking forward to talking with library staff and encourage all to stop by the BCR booth to learn about the many services BCR has available to assist them in better serving their patrons.

Kansas
The Kansas Tri-Conference is being held at the Expo Center Exhibit Hall in Topeka, April 11-13. BCR's Lisa Holmberg, project coordinator, Innovations & Special Projects, is scheduled to present "Understanding How Google Works," on Friday, April 13, from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Please join her to discover the inner workings of Google and how it can help libraries and their staff become better information providers. BCR's Jay Ford, Marketing & Support associate, will be staffing the BCR exhibit booth (#233). Ford and Holmberg will be available to answer questions, suggest products and services that can help save time and money and introduce what's new at BCR these days. Don't forget to stop by to get a BCR water bottle.

Washington
The Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick is hosting the Washington Library Association conference, April 18-21. BCR's Jay Ford will be available in the BCR booth to meet Washington's librarians. Keep him busy...stop by to chat with him, get an update on BCR's activities and pick up a BCR water bottle!

Oregon
OLA members are meeting in Corvallis at the LeSells Stewart and Alumni Center on the beautiful Oregon State University campus, April 18-20. BCR's Regan Harper, manager, Training & OCLC Services, is presenting the "BCR Network Update" from 8:30-10 a.m., on Friday, April 20. Come hear how BCR can help libraries save money and do more with less. Harper also will be staffing the exhibit booth and would enjoy the opportunity to meet and talk with Oregon librarians one-on-one and personally give away a BCR water bottle.

Montana
The Red Lion Colonial Inn in Montana's state capitol, Helena, is the site of the Montana Library Association Annual Conference, April 25-28. Two new faces will be representing BCR at the conference — Jay Ford, Marketing & Support associate, and Shelly Drumm, Emergent Technology trainer. Drumm is presenting two programs:

  • Podcasting 101, Friday, April 27, 10:30-12 noon — Learn how to disseminate information about your library out to the public using the latest technology.
  • Flickr for Libraries, Friday, April 27, 2-3 p.m. — Flickr can do many things. This session will give you ideas on how to use Flickr to promote your library and introduce two of the hottest topics in librarianship today — social software and folksonomies.

Ford will once again be staffing the BCR exhibit booth, and both Drumm and Ford look forward to meeting members of Montana's library community. This may be the last time to pick up a BCR water bottle, so make sure to get yours before they are all gone!

OCLC Releases Connexion Client 1.72

Version 1.72 of the Connexion client cataloging software is now available. This new interim version addresses several known problems in previous client versions. Recommendations and instructions for upgrading from either 1.60 or 1.70 are included below. Note that you will no longer be able to log on using version 1.60 after April 15.

In version 1.70, several problems have been resolved:

  • Microsoft Windows auto-update KB918118 that prevented record display.
  • Validation problems with Bengali, Devanagari, Tamil and Thai.
  • Export problem that added incorrect subfield information in field 035 when more than one OCLC control number is in the field.
  • Missing graphics for the macro recorder toolbar.

In version 1.71, the CJK problem with entering Chinese, Japanese and Korean script character using the IME has been resolved.

OCLC recommends the following:

  • If you are using 1.60, upgrade directly to version 1.72 before the April 15 end-of-life date for 1.60.
  • If you are using 1.70 with the 1.71 patch and do not need the fix in 1.72 for entering CJK script, wait for the release of version 2.00 to upgrade. Version 2.00 is planned for release mid-year.
  • If you are downloading the client for the first time, download and install the complete 1.72 client software.

Important reminder! Uninstall current client version(s) before upgrading to 1.72. If you previously installed a patch for your version of the client and want to upgrade to 1.72, please remember to uninstall both 1.70 and 1.71 (or both 1.60 and 1.61, if that is the version and corresponding patch which you currently have installed) before installing 1.72. It does not matter in what order you uninstall; you may uninstall either one of the pair (full software or patch) first.

OCLC will continue to support version 1.70, the 1.71 patch and interim version 1.72 after April 15, 2007; however, you will no longer be able to log on using 1.60.

Instructions for installing 1.72:

  1. Open your browser to psw.oclc.org.
  2. Enter your OCLC authorization and password.
  3. Select the link for Connexion client only version 1.72 software or Connexion client 1.72 complete software. (See the installation instructions available at the links next to each software package for details.)
  4. Scroll to the end of the OCLC Software License Agreement and select I Agree.
  5. The download window should display the file name xxxxx.exe or xxxxx.exe.
  6. Select Save and specify a folder on your workstation where you want to save the file. Be sure to remember the folder location for the next step.
  7. In Windows Explorer, open the folder where you saved the file and double-click it to start the setup program.
  8. Follow prompts to complete the installation.

Please don't hesitate to contact BCR with any questions or problems.

March OCLC System Maintenance to Impact All OCLC-NACO Users

OCLC-NACO users should be aware of OCLC system maintenance planned for March 23 to 25 that will impact their authority work. The current plan, which is subject to modification, is to disable the ability for NACO users to add and/or update authority records using the OCLC Connexion interfaces starting at approximately 9 p.m. (EDT), Friday, March 23.

The capability to add and/or update authority records will be reinstated at approximately 9 p.m. EDT, Sunday, March 25.

During that period, OCLC will also suspend the loading of distributed authority records from the Library of Congress, but will continue to retrieve contribution files. During the outage, users will continue to be able to: search and browse the LC Names and Subjects authority files, search and browse the LC Names and Subjects history files, create new authority records, edit existing authority records, lock existing authority records, save new and/or modified authority records to online and/or local files, submit new and/or modified authority records for peer review, control headings in bibliographic records using existing records in the LC Names and/or Subjects authority files, export authority records, print authority records.

Should a user attempt to add and/or replace a master authority record during the outage, a message will be displayed:

  • Connexion client (1.60 or 1.70) will return the message "An error has occurred…" if either the Add record or Replace record commands is invoked. If the user attempts to add a record from either the online or local save file, other error messages may be presented.
  • Connexion browser will return the messages "Add failed" or "Replace failed" depending on the action selected by the user.

Should any type of error message be returned, the user can choose to save the record to the online or local save file or cancel changes.

During the period of outage an OCLC System Alert will also be posted.

Contact Becky Dean at OCLC directly — (800) 848-5878, ext. 5144 or deanr@oclc.org — for additional information or assistance.

Changes Made to OCLC FirstSearch, WorldCat Resource Sharing

OCLC implemented the following enhancements and fixes to FirstSearch and WorldCat Resource Sharing on March 11.

WorldCat Resource Sharing: Enhancements
  • Electronic delivery addresses added to one- and two-per-page printing — Users are now able to see electronic delivery addresses on the one- and two-per-page print views. Fields are limited to a total length of 101 characters for 2-per-page output and 92 characters for 1-per-page output (including the label views).
  • Addition of LHR Summary field on one- and two-per-page printing — Users are now able to view local holdings data (volume, year, etc.) on the one- and two-per-page printouts.
  • Sample Card
WorldCat Resource Sharing: Fixes
  • ISBN display in the one- and two-per page printing — Field length of the ISBN field has expanded to guarantee the proper display of the 13 digit ISBNs.
  • Locations field added back to the two-per-page printing — The "Locations," field, which lists alternate lenders not in the lendings string, will once again be included in the two-per-page print view.

General Note about Printing in WorldCat Resource Sharing
In order to accommodate all required fields for printing, OCLC needed to decrease the font size from 9 points to 8.45 points. OCLC apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused and hopes to offer a printing schema in the near future that will allow libraries to customize the fields required for their local needs.

WorldCat Services Adminstrative Module: Fix
Previously, if a user defined only one Electronic Delivery Address in his/her Constant Data Options, the delivery method did not display in the Staff View Workform. The Staff View Workform would display only Electronic Delivery Addresses from Constant Data records when multiple delivery addresses were present. This error has now been fixed.

CDP to Merge into BCR

The Collaborative Digitization Program (CDP) and the Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR) last week announced their intention for the CDP to merge into BCR, effective April 1. Both organizations provide services to libraries and other cultural heritage organizations throughout a multistate area focused in the West. The digital services programmatic offerings of the merged organizations will be known as CDP@BCR.

The merger of the CDP — with its nationally recognized digitization expertise — into BCR — a multistate library cooperative serving more than 1,100 member libraries — will enable BCR to build new service programs in the area of digitization and reach out to cultural heritage organizations in addition to bringing CDP-based training, best practices and guidelines and consulting services to member libraries.

Nancy Allen, Chair of the CDP Board and Principal Investigator on most of the CDP-related grants, said, "This is a wonderful opportunity to move CDP to a new level of leadership and service quality, combining its expertise with that of BCR and reaching out to all of BCR's members as well as offering BCR technical capacity and expertise to CDP's cultural heritage community partners and members."

"BCR has an excellent reputation for providing quality training to library staff throughout our 11-state region," commented Brenda Bailey-Hainer, Executive Director of BCR. "The merger of CDP into BCR will allow us to expand our offerings into the area of digital collections using the tested curriculum of CDP and to build on the strengths of both organizations and their staffs. In addition, CDP's past success in securing federal grant funding for cutting edge digital projects will assist BCR with moving into this arena."

CDP will move from its current offices at the University of Denver to BCR, also based in Colorado, as of April 2, and the CDP Board will dissolve its nonprofit corporation to merge into BCR, also a not-for-profit corporation. Leigh Grinstead, currently CDP Operations Coordinator, will transition to BCR in a newly created position, CDP Program Coordinator, providing continuity to CDP members and partners. The current cdpheritage.org/ Web site material will be merged with the BCR Web site over time. A Digital Services Advisory Group will be formed to advise CDP@BCR on current and new digital services and initiatives. CDP Working Groups will continue to meet to create and update best practices and standards and to assist with future planning for digital initiatives and grant proposals.

For additional information, contact Brenda Bailey-Hainer, the Executive Director of BCR, at bbailey@bcr.org or (303) 751-6277 or Leigh Grinstead, at leigh.grinstead@du.edu or (303) 871-2006 (before April 1).

The Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR) is a nonprofit, multistate library cooperative that has served the library community since its founding in 1935, providing cost-effective library and information services. Today BCR (www.bcr.org/) serves libraries in 42 states, Canada and Guam, many through statewide agreements with state library agencies in 11 western states allowing all libraries in those states to use BCR services as member institutions.

The Collaborative Digitization Program, established in 1999 as the Colorado Digitization Project, enables access to cultural, historical and scientific heritage collections of the West by building collaboration between archives, historical societies, libraries and museums. The CDP (www.cdpheritage.org/) provides assistance to the cultural heritage community through best practice guidelines, workshops and digitization grant funding. The CDP also delivers access to thousands of digital photographs, text and sound files documenting the history, culture and science of the west through Heritage West.

Bailey-Hainer Reports from Alaska

Brenda Bailey-Hainer, BCR's executive director, recently returned from the Alaska Library Association Conference (AkLA), held in Juneau this year. She enjoyed a great turnout at her presentation, the "BCR Network Update," along with decent weather.

Celebrating the start of Alaska's new ListenAlaska Digital Catalog, OverDrive generously donated two MP3 players — one to be given away at the BCR Network Update on Saturday, February 24, and the other given away during a drawing at the BCR exhibit booth. The lucky person whose name was drawn at the exhibit booth was Maureen Callahan from the Seward Community Library. Joe D'Elia from the A Holmes Johnson Memorial Library in Kodiak won the player given away during Bailey-Hainer's program. Thanks to everyone who attended the BCR Network Update and took the time to stop at BCR's booth.

Visit the BCR Web site to view photos Bailey-Hainer took during the conference.

Written by Irish native Tina Neylon, the "Ireland Adventure Guide" will open their eyes to the astonishing treasures of this ancient island, showing travelers how to experience Ireland directly and intensely — as a participant and not just a spectator.

Free access to this resource provides valuable information for anyone planning a trip to Ireland, including learning how to join in the pub life of Dublin or meet Ireland's people through its theater and music groups. Little known historic sites, such as the lake where St. Patrick first landed in 442 AD, are highlighted, as are some of the finest golf courses in the world. Packed with essential information for the adventure-minded traveler, this guide is a comprehensive introduction to the people, the places and the culture of Ireland.

The eBook of the Month showcases new and noteworthy titles available from NetLibrary. Each month, NetLibrary selects a new featured title and provides free, unlimited access through the authenticated homepages of more than 13,000 public, academic and special libraries. NetLibrary has developed a tool kit of free promotional materials that can be downloaded and personalized for your library.
