OCLC Connexion Browser and Client Tutorials Updated

OCLC has updated tutorials for Connexion Browser and Connexion Client with new instruction on Metadata Extraction.

The Metadata Extraction functionality allows users to create bibliographic records by extracting metadata from electronic resources. To save the time and effort of transcribing bibliographic data to create records for electronic resources, the client automatically extracts metadata and inserts the data into a workform to produce a preliminary record to edit and complete.

Anyone not familiar with the Metadata Extraction functionality may want to review the appropriate tutorial and/or try extracting data from a source file for a specific URL on the Web or from a locally stored file to see how this functionality can save time and effort in transcribing data. Files types supported are Web pages (*.html or *.htm file), Word documents (*.doc file), Adobe PDF documents (*.pdf file) and MP3 files (*.mp3).

EBSCO Text-only Users — Please Note Changes, Enhancements

The EBSCOhost Web interface is now in full 508 compliance. This upgrade to EBSCOhost actually exceeds 508 compliance standards, expanding the accessibility of the research interfaces and enabling visually and physically impaired users to enjoy the features associated with the Web-based version of EBSCOhost. In addition, users with slower Internet connections will realize improved performance, as a result of faster, more efficient EBSCOhost Web page downloads.

EBSCO Text-only users should migrate to the EBSCOhost Web interface as soon as possible now that EBSCO has completed the Web interface enhancement which eliminates the need to use the Text-only feature. As part of the upgrade process, the personalized folder feature will be removed from the Text-only interface in just a few days. However, the Text-only interface (temporary) session folder will continue to be available for collecting Result List items, which can be printed, saved to disk or sent to email addresses, prior to ending an EBSCOhost session. Personalized folder (My EBSCOhost) functionality is available from EBSCOhost.

Please note: Items stored in personalized folders on EBSCO's Text-only interface will automatically be transferred to the EBSCOhost Web interface personalized folders (My EBSCOhost), in order to provide a seamless interface transition. To view your personalized folder, which was automatically transferred, simply access the EBSCOhost Web interface and then log in to your personalized folder account.

For our mobile and PDA customers who use EBSCO Text Only, EBSCOhost Mobile will be launched by the end of calendar year 2007. Text Only (without the personalized folder feature) will remain in place until EBSCOhost Mobile becomes available.

International Data Enhancements Added to WorldCat Registry

OCLC has installed three enhancements related to international data to the WorldCat Registry.

These enhancements include:

  • Availability of two Australia-specific identifiers, the Australian National Union Catalog and the Australian Business Number
Australian libraries can now modify two Australia-specific identifiers, the Australian National Union Catalog and the Australian Business Number. Both identifiers are unique numbers issued by Australian government offices. Nonauthorized users (i.e., users who do not modify Australian institution profiles) are able to view and search the new identifiers via the Advanced Search option. Note: OCLC will pre-populate the Australia identifiers at a later date with the data available from the National Library of Australia.
  • Original Data Provided By Link Added
While viewing the Profile Summary for an institution, a link is provided for all non-OCLC data sources for records originally batchloaded from those sources. For example, for institution data provided by the National Library of Australia, a link to its Web site is provided under the Profile Summary.
  • New Data Sources Added
The National Library of Australia, the National Library of New Zealand and the National Library of South Africa have agreed to add further information to specific profiles.

A summary of the recent initiatives can be found on the OCLC Web site at www5.oclc.org/downloads/design/abstracts/08062007/worldcatregistry.htm.

The WorldCat Registry provides a comprehensive, extensible and secure Web platform for managing and disseminating library institution data. Using the registry, all of an individual library's institutional data for electronic content and other kinds of identifying and administrative information can be stored in one place.

For more information on the WorldCat Registry, see the OCLC product page located at www.oclc.org/worldcat/registry/default.htm or contact Beth Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org> at BCR. An FAQ on the Registry is located here: www.worldcat.org/webservices/registry/xsl/faq/.

Batch Size Increased in WCA

OCLC has increased the number of records that can be exported in batch while using WorldCat Collection Analysis.

With OCLC's latest enhancement to the WorldCat Collection Analysis service, libraries that work with large numbers of records while using the service can now export records in a batch of up to 2,500 records. Previously, only 500 records could be exported at one time. This enhancement will make exporting large numbers of records easier and more efficient for users.

AccessScience Gets New Technology Platform

McGraw-Hill has developed a new technology platform for AccessScience. In mid-August, AccessScience 2.0 is being launched with a new interface, improved search engine and statistics reporting.

AccessScience features more than 8,500 online full-text articles, including articles from the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology 10th edition, Research Updates from the McGraw-Hill Yearbooks of Science & Technology and 110,000-plus definitions from the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. Some 13,000 illustrations and graphics and bibliographies containing more than 28,000 literature citations also are included.

As McGraw-Hill migrates to AccessScience 2.0, current users will experience no change in their service or authentication and no action is required on behalf of the library during the migration. However, customers using federated search engines or bar code authentication will need some additional information. McGraw-Hill has prepared an AccessScience 2.0 FAQ to answer all technical and content questions including federated search engines and bar code authentication. See http://www.elabs3.com/ct.html?rtr=on&s=djm,ug05,pe,8jsp,8h6u,b5b7,hiy0.

Sign up for McGraw-Hill's free AccessScience News e-mail to stay apprised of AccessScience updates and new features every month: www.elabs3.com/ct.html?rtr=on&s=djm,ug05,pe,goqp,5u,b5b7,hiy0.

Libraries interested in subscribing to AccessScience, please see the BCR Web page for more information: www.bcr.org/reference/accesssci/index.html.

PERSNAME-L Notification List Examines Personal Names Issues

Jay Shorten (University of Oklahoma) and Ian Fairclough (Marion, Ohio, Public Library) have set up an electronic notification list for issues about personal names in bibliographic and authority records. The list, PERSNAME-L, will interest those concerned with the accuracy of name headings in bibliographic databases. Corporate names are beyond the scope of this new list.

If you find a personal name heading that has been inappropriately assigned or wrongly input, you may report these on PERSNAME-L so that others working with the same affected record might be advised, and make appropriate corrections locally.

Please keep in mind that such mistakes should first be reported to the appropriate agency responsible for the record in question, in accordance with that agency's own policies. For example, errors in WorldCat bibliographic records should be reported to OCLC by email to bibchange@oclc.org or by one of the methods available in the OCLC Connexion interfaces. Errors in Library of Congress records may be e-mailed to cpso@loc.gov.

PERSNAME-L is intended for announcements rather than discussion. To insure that subscribers receive only pertinent material, PERSNAME-L will be moderated and only those messages which are deemed appropriate will be approved.

To subscribe to PERSNAME-L, please go to lists.ou.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=PERSNAME-L and click on Join or leave the list (or change settings).

Alternatively, you may send a message to mailto:LISTSERV@OU.EDU with the words SUBSCRIBE PERSNAME-L followed by a forename and surname.

PERSNAME-L has no formal connection with OCLC, the Library of Congress or the NACO (Name Authority Cooperative) project.
