BCR's Bailey-Hainer Speaking at LITA Forum

Brenda Baily-Hainer, BCR's executive director, is presenting "Rethinking Resource Sharing: GettingIT Right," on Sunday, October 7, 9:00-10:10 a.m., at the 10th annual LITA National Forum, being held at the Marriott City Center, Denver, Colorado, October 4-7. With technology the theme of the conference, attendess will be exploring the state of library technology today and for the future.

Join Bailey-Hainer as she discusses a new resource sharing model. Reviewing the growth of extensions or plug-ins for Web browsers that assist in locating library resources, she will introduce the concurrent development of a group of librarians and others who have been rethinking resource sharing and have conceived a more generic and extensible plug-in.

A prototype "GetIT Button" is being developed by members of the Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative, an "ad hoc group that advocates for a complete rethink of the way libraries conduct resource sharing in the context of the global internet revolution and all of the developments that have arisen from that." The session will focus on a demonstration of the prototype and other similar efforts underway and serve as a springboard for initiating other efforts.

BCR Staff Visiting Idaho, Nevada and Iowa Conferences

BCR staff members are busy preparing for three state library conferences during the first two weeks in October. The Idaho Library Association annual conference is being held in Nampa, October 3-6, and the Nevada Library Association conference is scheduled for October 4-6, at the Nevada State Library and Archives, Carson City. Iowa librarians will convene in Coralville, October 10-12, for the Iowa Library Association annual conference.

In Idaho, BCR's executive director, Brenda Bailey-Hainer, will be presenting the keynote address, "Reaching Your Users with Technology," 8:00 a.m., Thursday, October 4. Then, from 1:30-2:45 p.m., Shelly Drumm, BCR's emergent technology trainer, will be "Making Some Noise" at her "Podcasting and the Power of RSS" workshop. Learn how RSS can help librarians reach out to patrons in new and exciting ways and how libraries can harness the power of RSS by podcasting great programming from the library. Visit the BCR exhibit booth (#23) and learn about BCR's variety of products and services and what every library in Idaho has access to through the Idaho State Library's BCR membership.

BCR's Gillian Harrison, marketing & support manager, is traveling to Carson City for the Nevada Library Association annual conference. She is scheduled to present "Remember the User: Keeping Up with Technology Products," on Friday, October 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This information session will give librarians ideas on how to make intelligent and informed decisions about which technologies give the best return for a library's limited time and financial resources, as well as which technologies can best reach patrons wherever they are and whenever they want. Harrison will also be staffing the BCR booth and is looking forward to chatting with Nevada librarians during the conference.

Look for Linda Gonzalez, member services librarian, and Jay Ford, library services associate, at the Iowa Library Association conference. Gonzalez is set to present "RDA: The Next Generation of AACR," on Friday, October 12, 10:20-11:10 a.m. If you haven't heard about Resource Description and Access (RDA) yet, this workshop is for you. This next edition of the AACR, currently in revision, promises to change cataloging practice in much of the English-speaking world. Learn what is expected to change and what will stay the same. Also on October 12, Gonzalez will be hosting the ever-popular BCR Update from 11:20 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Both Gonzalez and Ford will be available in the BCR exhibit booth to answer questions, provide information and meet with librarians from Iowa.

CONTENTdm 4.3 to be Released in October

OCLC has announced the upcoming October release of CONTENTdm 4.3. Free for all users with a current annual maintenance agreement, CONTENTdm 4.3 includes a number of new features. Update kits will be available for download from the User Support Center. CD copies will also be available for organizations that wish to do a clean install.

Feature preview
CONTENTdm 4.3 has several new features, a few of which are described below.

  • CONTENTdm 4.3 provides expanded support for PDF files. New features include automatic conversion of multiple-page PDF files into compound objects, search-term highlighting within the PDF, creation of thumbnail images from PDF files, improved text extraction and a subset print option that allows end users to select a subset of pages from the PDF file to save or print. These new features will make processing born-digital documents quick and easy. Additionally, pages of a compound object automatically generated from a PDF file will not count towards the total number of items on the server.
  • Connexion digital import is a new feature that allows catalogers using the OCLC Connexion client to add digital items to their CONTENTdm collections during their Connexion cataloging process. The Connexion digital import requires both a Connexion subscription and the use of CONTENTdm Hosting Services.
  • Controlled vocabularies can now be shared between fields both within the same collection and across different collections.
  • Interfaces for configuring OAI settings, the stop words list and the image viewers, at both the server and collection level, have been added to CONTENTdm Administration to make it easier to access and configure those options.

The search engine upgrade, which was originally planned for this release, has been postponed until Version 4.4. This version will incorporate the powerful OCLC Find search engine that is used for WorldCat.

A complete feature list for Version 4.3 will be available on the CONTENTdm User Support Center when the software is released.

Visit CONTENTdm at OCLC www.oclc.org/contentdm/default.htm for more information.

Changes in WorldCat Services Administrative Module

OpenURLs additions and changes in the Administrative Module are now automatically made in the WorldCat Registry.

When a library adds or modifies OpenURL server(s) in the WorldCat Services Administrative Module, the changes are automatically made in the WorldCat Registry. Previously, a library had to indicate whether the changes to OpenURL servers should be carried over to the WorldCat Registry via checkbox. This checkbox is now removed.

Note: If you delete a server in the Administrative Module, the delete does not occur in the WorldCat Registry. Libraries must still delete the server in the WorldCat Registry.

WorldCat Collection Analysis: Enhancements and Free Training Session

OCLC has installed two enhancements to WorldCat Collection Analysis (WCA) and scheduled a free training session to showcase recent enhancements made to the service.

The two new enhancements are:

  • Column Graphing — You can now graph your analysis results by column (in addition to graphing by row). This makes it easier to graph data across multiple criteria (e.g. holdings in a publication date range by subject or holdings by subject in a particular format, etc.). To see a visual representation of your analysis results, simply click on the graph icon above the column data you would like to graph.
  • Limiting by Call Number — You can now limit your analysis by LC, Dewey or NLM call number. This allows you to quickly drill down to the most granular level of the Conspectus that contains the call number you are interested in. No matter what analysis you are running (My Library, WorldCat Comparison, ILL Analysis, Peer comparison, etc.), simply click on the Limit Analysis button and enter the call number you wish to limit by. You may also continue to drill down to the call number of interest manually.

For more information on WorldCat Collection Analysis, contact Bethany Levrault at BCR (blevraul@bcr.org).

Anyone interested in learning more about the new features added to WCA, are invited to take part in a free, live Web session on Tuesday, September 18, from 2:30-3:30 pm EDT (12:30 pm Mountain Time).

Among the recent enhancements to be discussed:

  • Applying elements of FRBR to your WorldCat Comparison
  • The new Limit by Call Number feature
  • New predefined groups available for comparison
  • Increased number of languages available to limit an analysis
  • More granular Conspectus breakout for Government Documents
  • Increased number of records that can be exported in a batch
  • Larger peer comparison groups

To register for the webinar, go to www3.oclc.org/app/request/bin/request.asp?specialCode=WCASep07 and fill out the online form.

OCLC Begins Loading Genre Authority Records from Library of Congress

With OCLC's loading of this week's subject authority records from the Library of Congress into Connexion Authorities, OCLC cataloging members may now search or browse for Genre authority records (X55 tags) via Connexion client 2.0 or Connexion browser interface.

Genre terms in catalog records indicate the form, genre, style, technique or physical characteristics of the cataloged resource and are tagged 655 in MARC bibliographic records. The Genre authority record tags the authorized form of entry for the genre term as a 155; each cross-reference is tagged 455.

With the introduction of these records, a Genre index is available in OCLC Authorities. These authority records are also available via the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) index.

The Library of Congress has distributed a limited number of Genre authority records to date and at present is using only the Library of Congress Subject Headings list as a source of these terms. An example of a newly added Genre authority record is LCCN sh2007025004 (OCLC ARN 7519072), for Fiction films.

Although the Genre index labels are not present in the authority searching or browsing drop-down lists in Client 1.7x, the Genre indexes can be accessed via the command line in the 1.7x search and browse dialog boxes. The index label for the Genre index is ge. An example of a search from the command line is: ge: films and an example of a command line browse is sca ge: films.

Currently, headings tagged as 655, second indicator 0, are not candidates for the control headings functionality in Connexion. This will be enabled as part of a future Connexion enhancement.

Please contact Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) or Bethany Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) at BCR for additional information or assistance.

New Features in WorldCat.org

New features have been added to OCLC's WorldCat.org, providing library patrons the opportunity to improve their citation skills, add information to their social bookmark lists and more.

Library patrons now can view and save citations using the five common bibliographic styles, add library-owned items to their social bookmarks or use the Advanced Search option to locate words with Library of Congress subject headings. Highlights of these new features include:

Citations Available in WorldCat Lists

  • The lists of library-owned materials your library users can create on WorldCat.org now be viewed and saved as bibliographic citations.
  • The Citations View for a WorldCat list allows users to display citations of listed items in their choice of five common styles: APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA or Turabian.
  • Users can export a list in their selected citation style, choosing which list items should be exported. A handy Select All link lets them quickly include every item on the list.
  • Exported list citations can be saved locally in HTML, Rich Text or RIS format, and are compatible with Endnote bibliographic software or the RefWorks research management Web tool.
  • The previously available WorldCat list display which featured basic item information, the ability to add personal notes and move, copy or delete list items, is now available under the Details and Notes View tab.

To create your own WorldCat lists, log into WorldCat.org or create your account at worldcat.org/account/?page=login.

Social Bookmarking Added to Detailed Records

  • Patrons who maintain social bookmarks on Web sites such as Digg, Del.icio.us, Facebook, Yahoo! or Google can add library-owned items to their bookmarks using the AddThis.com bookmarking button. The button is available on the detailed record page for any item in WorldCat, under the Share It heading.
  • When a user mouses over the bookmarking button, they see a window with links to 11 popular Web bookmarking services. (Clicking More presents a full menu of 34 such services.) After selecting a bookmarking site, users can log into or create a new account with that site. A link to the WorldCat detailed record is automatically added to their bookmarks.

Subject Index Added to Advanced Search

  • The Advanced Search on WorldCat.org lets users search on words within Library of Congress subject headings, helping them find similar items and related subject matter more easily. The advanced search also lets users query WorldCat by keyword, title, author and ISBN or ISSN, with limiting by language, format and publication date range.

Advance Ordering Now Available for NetLibrary eAudiobooks

NetLibrary has introduced a new program that allows libraries to place advance orders on forthcoming titles from NetLibrary's eAudiobook Purchase Program, providing libraries with titles their users demand at the earliest release date possible.

Fall 2007 eAudiobooks Now Available for Pre-order
The fall 2007 release schedule (September-December) includes more than 200 highly anticipated electronic audiobook titles featuring new releases, backlist favorites, the latest bestsellers, children's and young adult titles, plus award-winning authors in multiple subject categories. Participating publishers include Books on Tape and Listening Library.

A complete list of fall 2007 forthcoming titles now available for pre-order is posted on the OCLC Web site (in Excel format) and is also presented in TitleSelect. Go to www.oclc.org/netlibrary/offers/default.htm.

The advance order program will occur three times per year, every four months:

Fall: titles to be released September-December
Spring: titles to be released January-April
Summer: titles to be released May-August

Forthcoming NetLibrary eAudiobook titles will be announced up to three months in advance of NetLibrary’s release date. Libraries may visit the OCLC Web site to find the schedule of titles to be released. To ensure prompt delivery when titles become available, and thus availability to their users, libraries are encouraged to place orders for titles in advance of their release date. Libraries that place advance orders will not be billed until the titles are loaded to their NetLibrary account.

Brodart New OCLC Cataloging Partner

OCLC has added Brodart Company to its list of WorldCat Cataloging Partners. Brodart is a popular multi-service vendor that has been working with libraries for more than 65 years. Brodart's Books & Automation Division stocks its warehouse with more than 2 million books and offers libraries and schools access to titles from over 80,000 publishers, including 5 million English-language titles and Spanish-language books, plus audio and video products. Brodart's staff of library professionals designs, maintains and consults with libraries in their selection processes and workflow throughout the world.

The WorldCat Cataloging Partners program is a new, enhanced service that merges the existing OCLC Cataloging Partners program with the OCLC PromptCat service.
