OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging Display Holdings Option Coming Soon

On December 9, OCLC expects to install changes which will allow users to display holdings via OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging, in the 948 field of the full bibliographic record.

Users who want to display holdings will need to be able to configure the Element Set Name in their Z39.50 client. Element Set Name FD will display default holdings. Element Set Name FA will display all holdings. There will be a separate 948 field for each holding library. The 948 fields will display alphabetically by the library name.

Subfields in the 948 field will be as follows:

  • Subfield a will contain the ISO country code.
  • Subfield b will contain the U.S. state and Canadian province information. For all other countries the code in this field is not meaningful, so subfield b will not be included.
  • Subfield c will contain the OCLC symbol.
  • Subfield d will contain the library name.

OCLC has advised various local system vendors of this upcoming change.

Watch BCReview for an announcement of successful implementation after December 9.

Please contact Bethany Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) or Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) with any questions.

Newer MARC 21 Characters Now in NACO Records

The implementation of certain newer MARC 21 characters has been agreed to by the NACO nodes (British Library, Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine and OCLC).

As of October 22, the following characters will be allowed in records contributed to the LC/NACO Authority File (see the code tables at www.loc.gov/marc/specifications/specchartables.html for encoding information):

  • Spacing underscore
  • Spacing grave
  • Opening curly bracket
  • Closing curly bracket
  • Spacing tilde
  • Degree sign
  • Lower case script L
  • Phono copyright mark
  • Copyright mark
  • Sharp
  • Inverted question mark
  • Inverted exclamation mark

Implementation of a few other newer characters is deferred at this time. A separate announcement will be made when the Eszett (continue to use ss per LCRI 1.0E) Euro Spacing circumflex may be used. The Library of Congress will work with OCLC to identify and convert existing NACO authority records using the number sign for the musical sharp and superscript zero for the degree sign.

These new characters may also now be found in LC-issued bibliographic records. As part of this implementation, LC has revised LCRI 1.4F5 — describing LC's practice for continued use of the letters c and p for the copyright and phono copyright symbols in 260 $c. For efficiency, LC's catalogers will generally follow this same practice in $a of authority 670 citations.

Revised Edition of Differences Between, Changes Within

The ALA/ALCTS/CCS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access has announced the publication of the revised edition of Differences Between, Changes Within: Guidelines on When to Create a New Record. This revised edition is now available as a free, 38-page download (PDF format) and is no longer available as a print publication.

Originally intended to be an appendix to the 2002 AACR2 rule revisions, Differences Between, Changes Within evolved into a stand-alone document that supplements current descriptive cataloging rules by providing information about creating new records or updating existing records.

The document helps guide the cataloger in determining whether the item in hand can be cataloged with existing copy or requires a new bibliographic record. General guidelines are followed by specific guidelines for manifestation-level records for single-part monographs, multipart monographs, integrating resources and serials. The text describes what constitutes a major difference between manifestations, requiring the creation of an original record, as well as detailing major changes within a serial manifestation that would lead to the creation of a new record. In addition, guidance is also provided to identify minor changes that would not require a new bibliographic record, but might necessitate updating an existing record.

This new 2007 edition reflects changes through the final set of amendments to AACR2, which were issued in 2005. Some guidelines have been changed and some removed. All rule references have been verified and updated wherever necessary.

To download your PDF copy of Differences Between, Changes Within, direct your browser to www.ala.org/ala/alctscontent/alctspubsbucket/webpublications/cataloging/newrecord/differences.htm.

WorldCat Resource Sharing: Enhancements and Fixes

On Sunday, October 7, OCLC installed three enhancements and three fixes to WorldCat Resource Sharing.

The enhancements include the following:

  • New reason for "No" — Users will find a new reason for "No" as a response to borrowers available from the drop-down menu. "Not licensed to fill" should be used to better define unfilled requests that the library may own, but cannot fill due to contractual obligations (such as for electronic resources).
  • Changes in how "Not found as cited" is handled — Requests that are marked "Not found as cited" will be automatically rerouted back to the requesting library as "Unfilled." By not routing the request to additional lenders in the lender string, turnaround time for incorrectly cited requests should be reduced.
  • Shipping labels available for individual requests — It is now possible to print shipping labels while individual requests are processed as well as through batch functionality by selecting the "Print Shipping Labels" checkbox while updating the request. After updating the request, click "Printing" in the menu bar to see the Mailing Labels print button.

Three fixes have also been installed:

  • The ability to view 20, 50, 75 or 99 requests in a given category is now persistent when users move from category to category.
  • Users are now able to search the archive with the closed date as their search guide.
  • When a value was present in both the "Ship To" field and in the "Electronic Delivery" field in the ILL request form, some users were not able to update these requests. This was due to an error in coding and has been corrected.

Additional information can be accessed on OCLC's WorldCat Resource Sharing Web page.

OvidSP: New Search Platform Coming

OvidSP, Ovid's new search and discovery platform, goes live on Thursday, October 25. Users who currently are subscribed to the Ovid platform will have immediate access to the new platform. Users who are subscribed to Ovid using the SilverPlatter platform, have a much longer timeline to switch over. Users of either platform are invited to request trial access to become familiar with the new features and functionality.

With OvidSP, users will get the combined functionality of both SilverPlatter and the full text and bibliographic database features of Ovid Gateway, along with some significant enhancements:

  • Clean, intuitive interface — In addition to a new look, new functionality will support free text, natural language searching; simultaneous searching across all databases, journals and books; and results ranked by relevancy.
  • Multiple search modes — OvidSP is geared to all types of searchers, from beginners to the more advanced. In an easy-to-use tabular format, users can choose their preferred search style: Basic, Find Citation, Subject Search, Search Fields or SilverPlatter "Classic," which employs traditional SilverPlatter syntax.
  • Improved research workflow tools — Enhanced Search Aids deliver search transparency and other features to narrow or broaden searches. Look for improved Alerting tools such as RSS feeds and eTOCS. Abstracts are now easily accessible in line, search results can be annotated.

If You Subscribe Using the Ovid Platform
Users will continue to have dual access, both to the new OvidSP platform and to the Ovid Web Gateway until it is retired on February 4, 2008. During the interim period between October 25 and February 4, there will be a link on the Gateway main search page directly to OvidSP. Alerts, jumpstarts and saved searches will continue to be available in the new interface. However, any new versions of these features you create in OvidSP during this period will not be available in the Gateway environment.

If You Subscribe Using the SilverPlatter Platform
Beginning October 25, you may request trial access to OvidSP through support@ovid.com to familiarize yourself with the new features and functionality. Local language interfaces are scheduled for release in early 2008. You will be able to use the SilverPlatter platform until early 2009.

For additional information or questions regarding your subscription, please contact Karen Graham (kgraham@bcr.org) at BCR.

NetLibrary eBook Focuses on New View of Capitalism

The October NetLibrary eBook of the month gives subscribers access to the fully revised and updated edition of Jonathon Porrit's groundbreaking work, Capitalism as if the World Matters.

When first published in 2005, Capitalism as if the World Matters, by one of the leading eco-warriors of our time, shocked both a generation of environmentalists and a generation of business people by brushing aside their petty squabbles and artificial battle lines with a powerful argument — that the only way to save the world from fuel shortages, climate change and environmental catastrophe is to embrace a new type of capitalism, and to do it quickly.

New material includes in-depth coverage of the United States and the politics of climate change, the state of environmental debate and the massive upsurge in religious engagement with climate and the environment. Fresh case studies include the role of huge U.S. corporations such as Walmart and General Electric in our sustainable capitalist future. Porritt also looks in-depth at China and the global impact this economic giant may have as it grows into the most environmentally damaging — or perhaps the first sustainable — superpower of the 21st century.

Destined to be one of the most important business, economics and politics books of the year, this is a must read for everyone from business executives to environmental activists to students to the very politicians with their hands on the levers of power.

To see more, visit NetLibrary's eBook of the month Web page.
