EBSCOhost User Interface Enhancements

In late December, EBSCO Publishing plans to release a new design of the Visual Search option in the EBSCOhost and several other user interfaces, including the Student Research Center, the Business Searching Interface, the Literary Reference Center, the International Security & Counter-Terrorism Reference Center, Kids Search, Searchasaurus and Consumer Health Complete.

The new, advanced Visual Search option continues the graphics-based, zoomable frames design of the previous version; however, users will now be able to select either of two Visual Search interface styles, presented in Adobe's Flash format. Library administrators with access to the EBSCOadmin administrative tools will be able to control which of the two styles will serve as the default for their institution's subscription to EBSCOhost.

Take a look at what's coming in the advanced Visual Search user interface for yourself!

Need Help with Graphic Novel Collection Development?

BCR is now offering H.W. Wilson's Graphic Novels Core Collection: A Selection Guide database to help librarians choose the most current and recommended graphic novels from a selection of approximately 2,000 titles.

The newest release of this collection helps librarians select age-appropriate works in this increasingly popular graphic novel genre. The database provides ratings for materials as well as "...descriptive and evaluative annotations .... and offers insight into both quality and content..." for librarians. Automatic links to cover art are provided so librarians can get a feel for the work. Content searches can be limited by fiction, nonfiction and biography to reflect the growing diversity available in this relatively new literary form.

New entries are added throughout the subscription year, and an automated "What's New" query gives users the ability to find resources that have been added to the database recently. As new topics are added, users can configure the database to receive daily, weekly or monthly alerts by e-mail.

Free 30-day trials are available. For more information, contact BCR's Maura Dunn (mdunn@bcr.org).

NetLibrary's December eBook Gives Staying Young Advice

The NetLibrary December eBook of the Month reveals the secret to looking and feeling 15 years younger. Younger You, by Dr. Eric Braverman, examines how controlling brain hormones through diet, lifestyle changes, key vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements can halt the aging process.

In the constant battle to stay young and feel fit, Dr. Braverman observes that people will try any of the quick fixes that come on the market, including so-called miracle products, fad diets, trendy exercise programs and untested supplements. Many even risk elective surgical procedures just to look young again. But, according to the author, you don't need surgery, pricey cosmetics or starvation to look and feel 15 years younger.

In the book, Dr. Braverman asserts that the secret to living a longer, more vibrant life has at last been discovered and the proverbial fountain of youth is right in your hands. With Younger You (McGraw-Hill, 2007) as your guide, you'll discover how to:

  • Get a restful, restorative night's sleep and have energy that lasts all day long.
  • Lift your mood by increasing your natural hormone levels.
  • Improve your heart health with natural supplements, herbs and spices.
  • Increase your muscle mass, boost your memory, build your bones, save your skin and much more.

Dr. Braverman presents a comprehensive anti-aging life plan designed to help you look and feel years younger. After taking an in-depth quiz to help pinpoint your problem areas, you will discover how to immediately address your most pressing needs. Vital organs like the heart, liver, brain and lungs will experience the benefits of hormonal balance, so you will live a lot longer and be healthier, too!

About the Author
Eric R. Braverman, M.D., is the director of the Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH) Medical Centers in New York and Philadelphia. The author of several books on health, including the bestselling The Edge Effect, he runs a thriving practice in New York City.

Oil Spills and Economic News Included in Dewey Blog Posts

Visit 025.431: The Dewey blog, a discussion of any and all things concerning the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. Classification for recent items from the news, such as the oil spill in the San Francisco Bay and the foreign exchange rate of the U.S. dollar, is discussed.

If your library has bought resources on these topics, here's some advice:

  • 363.7382 (Oil as an environmental pollutant) is where interdisciplinary works on oil spills are classed.
  • 628.16833 (Oil spills) is where resources on water pollution engineering aspects of dealing with oil spills are classed.
  • A work on the spill in San Francisco Bay might be classed in 363.7382097946 (Oil as an environmental pollutant in the San Francisco Bay Area — built from 363.7382) as an interdisciplinary work on a specific marine oil spill near land that discusses the impact on the water, and the coast is classed with the area number for the land affected.
  • On the economic front, works on the foreign exchange rate of the U.S. dollar and the yen are classed in 332.4560952073 (Exchange rates of Japanese and United States currencies), while resources on the foreign exchange rate of the U.S. dollar with respect to multiple currencies are classed in 332.4560973 (Exchange rate of United States currency).
  • The discovery of an almost 18 inch-long fossilized claw from the pterygotid eurypterid (a Paleozoic era "sea scorpion") made the science news recently (see the Royal Society Publishing's "Biology Letters.") Works about pterygotid eurypterid (the one from which the fossilized claw came was probably 8 feet long) are classed in 565.493 (Eurypterida).

Visit 025.431 for specific instructions on these class numbers and more. The blog is edited by Jonathan Furner, assistant editor of the DDC, with contributions from other members of the Dewey editorial team, at the Decimal Classification Division of the Library of Congress.

WorldCat.org Adds Links to WorldCat Identities/British Library Direct Service

WorldCat.org, OCLC's public destination site for the WorldCat database, has introduced links to WorldCat Identities. Also new are links to the British Library Direct service for purchase online.

WorldCat Identities
Located beneath the Details tab in WorldCat.org records, links under About the Author(s) take a searcher to the Identity listing for each name in the list. Each identity listing presents a profile (or identity) of a person or a company. The listing is meant to be a snapshot of the company or the person based on some 25 million personal and corporate authors mentioned in WorldCat. Profiled names include authors, musicians, actors, directors and others in key creative roles. Profiled companies can be publishers, film studios and other firms responsible for releasing a work. The Identities page includes an interactive publication timeline, audience-level bar graph, links to related profiles and more.

For example, view the WorldCat.org record for Star Wars Episode IV, and select any of the names listed under Details > About the Authors, such as George Lucas. You will be taken to a page listing works by Lucas, as well as information on genres, subjects headings and more.

British Libraries Direct Service
Also in WorldCat.org, links are provided to the British Library Direct service, where electronic copies of journal articles may be purchased. The links are provided in the Get It and Buy This Item portions of records and are delivered as secure PDF documents (typically within 24 hours). British Library Direct offers pay-as-you-go access to 20,000 international research journals in many fields.

New OCLC Connexion Digital Import Feature Available

The new Connexion import for digital collections is now available in client 2.0. Catalogers using the Connexion client (version 2.0) can now add digital items to CONTENTdm collections during the Connexion cataloging process.

This new feature streamlines digital collection creation by integrating it with standard cataloging workflows. The latest release of the CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software (version 4.3) supports the Connexion digital import feature.

Connexion catalogers can attach a digital file (or files, if more than one digital file is associated with the same record) to their WorldCat record by using the Connexion client. The digital file is then added to the designated CONTENTdm collection along with its associated metadata record. Metadata records are mapped to Qualified Dublin Core when added to the CONTENTdm collection; TIFF images are converted to JPEG2000; and OCR is performed for TIFF images comprising compound objects. PDF processing occurs if enabled in the CONTENTdm collection. Additionally, the OCLC number from the WorldCat record is added to the new OCLC number administrative field in CONTENTdm.

Digital items added to CONTENTdm using the Connexion client are discoverable from OCLC FirstSearch, WorldCat.org and WorldCat Local. Each digital item added to CONTENTdm using the Connexion client is associated with its WorldCat record via a persistent URL based on the OCLC number (WorldCat accession number) of the WorldCat record. The persistent URL of the form www.worldcat.org/oclc/oclc#/viewonline (where oclc# is the number of the record) now provides one-click access to digital content. By integrating digital collection creation with standard cataloging workflows, Connexion digital import provides an additional option for organizations looking to expand participation in growing and maintaining their digital collections.

The Connexion digital import requires both an OCLC Cataloging subscription and the use of CONTENTdm Hosting Services.

CONTENTdm offers a complete set of tools to store, manage and deliver digital collections such as documents, photos, newspapers, audio and video on the Web.

Circulation Analysis New Feature for Individual WCA Subscribers

The new Circulation Analysis feature of WorldCat Collection Analysis (WCA) allows you to see how your collection is being used (or not used) by your patrons. This information about your collection's usage can inform decisions about weeding, movement to off-site storage, budget allocation, digitization and acquisitions.

Data available within Circulation Analysis includes:

  • Circulation date
  • Total checkouts
  • Circulation frequency
  • Total titles circulated
  • Percentage of titles circulated
  • Titles not circulated
  • Average checkouts per title circulated

To create a circulation analysis in WCA, you must first run a report via your ILS to extract a minimal set of data elements. For instructions on what data is required to create a circulation analysis and how to submit that data, please visit the OCLC Collection Analysis Web page.

OCLC is offering a free, live webinar to help you get the most out of this service. Please register to sit in on one of the following dates:

Information directly from OCLC is being mailed to libraries with an existing individual WCA subscription.

OCLC offers a live demo environment for Circulation Analysis. If you are interested in viewing it, please contact Beth Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) at BCR for login and password instructions.

ILL Fee Management: Should Your Library Participate?

Select BCR libraries may have recently received communication from OCLC regarding the ILL Fee Management (IFM) feature available in WorldCat Resource Sharing. If your library charges for interlibrary loan requests and you currently do not participate in IFM, you may want to consider it. Participation can save you time and money, with charges directly reconciled on your BCR invoice. OCLC has created a Web calculator to help in estimating your potential savings.

If your library has a WorldCat Resource Sharing subscription that has been in place for 12 months or more, there are no charges to begin using IFM. The service is included in your library's WorldCat Resource Sharing subscription. To begin using IFM, you can either select IFM on each request you place or set up constant data to apply to your transactions. Reports with details of your IFM transactions for both borrowing and lending are available via OCLC's Usage Statistics interface.

If your library is new to OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing and has been using the service for less than 12 months, using IFM will incur a transaction-based administrative fee of $1.36 per use (IFM4572). After the initial 12-month probationary period, your borrowing activity will be re-evaluated, and your new subscription price will have this administrative fee rolled in. If you are unsure whether your institution is in a probationary subscription period for WorldCat Resource Sharing, please contact Regan Harper (rharper@bcr.org) for assistance.

For more information on ILL Fee Management, see OCLC's FAQ pages.

JSC for Development of RDA Meeting Summary Available

The Joint Steering Committee (JSC) for Development of RDA met in Chicago in October to discuss Resource Description and Access (RDA), the cataloging rules anticipated to replace the Anglo American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. (AACR2). A summary of the outcomes of this meeting is now available.

As a result of discussions at the meeting, JSC decided to reorganize the structure of RDA to align it more closely to Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and Functional Requirements of Authority Data (FRAD).

The current structure of RDA breaks it down into Part A (Description and Relationships) and Part B (Access Point Control). The new structure breaks RDA down into 10 sections organized into two groups. One group will focus on recording the attributes of each of the FRBR-defined entities, and the other group will focus on recording the relationships between those entities.

Other decisions at the meeting impact the practice of uniform titles for the Bible, the treatment of initial articles in certain types of headings, the creation of access points for treaties and what changes in a continuing resource require a new record.

OCLC Policies Directory and WorldCat Resource Sharing Enhancements

Enhancements to the OCLC Policies Directory and to WorldCat Resource Sharing were recently completed by OCLC. Improved advanced searching and deflection capabilities and additional quick tips are now available in the OCLC Policies Directory. WorldCat Resource Sharing updates include the ability to retain the first renewal date and to print more than one shipping label at a time.

Improved Advanced Searching
This enhancement will return more accurate results for the advanced search in the Policies Directory. Advanced Search now eliminates formats listed as exceptions, noncirculating or items in notes fields. Additionally, OCLC testing and training symbols will be eliminated from the search results. The Advanced Search for Group Affiliation has also been fixed.

Additional Quick Tips
Additional Quick Tips will be added to the Change OCLC ILL Supplier Status page. This will clarify date entry for libraries wanting to set themselves as nonsuppliers.

Additional Deflection Capabilities

  • Cost — Lenders will be able to set a pricing threshold that says: If the borrower's maximum cost is less than my charges, deflect it.
  • Age of Material — Libraries will be able to state that they will not lend materials that are of a certain age. Libraries can state if they wish to deflect requests for materials that are less than XX years old or greater than XX years old. This is based on publication date, not when the holding was set, to indicate how long an item has been in a library's collection.
  • Last Lender in Lender String — Lenders will be able to state that requests be deflected unless they are the last lender in the lender string (not the only lender with a holding). In effect, this is a deflection override: Deflect all requests unless I'm last in the lender string.
  • The OCLC Policies Directory Quick Reference has been updated to reflect these changes.

    Renewal Date
WorldCat Resource Sharing users will now have a record of the due date in the Due Date field if a second renewal request is denied. Previously, the due date of the first renewal was lost.

More Detail Descriptions on Label Format
WorldCat Resource Sharing users will now have a more descriptive definition for the label sizes including additional label formats and the number of labels on a sheet. Users will also now have the ability to print more than one shipping label at a time.

Questions? Please contact Beth Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) at BCR.

OCLC WorldCat.org, Open WorldCat Require FirstSearch Subscription

If you've been on top of the latest OCLC product and service offerings, you will have heard more and more about WorldCat.org and the Open WorldCat program. But you may not be aware of how these new services fit into, and interact with, the traditional FirstSearch WorldCat subscription. Does the fact that WorldCat.org and Open WorldCat are available for all Web users mean that a subscription to FirstSearch is no longer necessary?

Although WorldCat.org and the Open WorldCat program are available via the open Web, libraries must have holdings in WorldCat and an active WorldCat subscription on the FirstSearch interface in order for their holdings to display in WorldCat.org services. In other words, if your library has only "per search" access to FirstSearch, your item's ownership will not display in WorldCat.org.

Worldcat.org services do not affect traditional holdings display via Connexion, WorldCat Resource Sharing or FirstSearch. A library adding holdings to records in WorldCat using any approved method (such as OCLC Connexion, CatExpress or batch processing) will show its holdings for other Connexion, FirstSearch and WorldCat Resource sharing users.

For more information about WorldCat.org and Open WorldCat, visit www.oclc.org/worldcat/web/default.htm.

OCLC's comparison chart of WorldCat's public views is located at www.oclc.org/worldcat/introduction/comparison.htm.

    WorldCat Collection Analysis Auto-Delete Reminder

OCLC would like to remind users of WorldCat Collection Analysis that any WCA comparison groups not accessed within 120 days are automatically deleted.

Any comparison groups (e.g. Authoritative Lists, Peer Comparisons, Secondary Groups and Predefined Groups) you have previously created but have not accessed in 120 days are automatically deleted. This is due to the tremendous amount of data storage space such comparisons take up.

Please note, however, that ILL Analyses are the exception. They do not expire.

RUSA STARS ALA Midwinter Resource Sharing Training Session

RUSA STARS is presenting a free half-day workshop on the "why" behind interlibrary loan.

Your library's interlibrary loan service should reflect your philosophy of service, your institution's mission and your library's unique collection. But how do you do that? What's behind interlibrary loan, how does this community work together and where do you go for support beyond the keystrokes?

Join other interlibrary loan practitioners for a free half-day workshop entitled "ILL — Everything You Always Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask" on January 11, 2008, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. The workshop is brought by RUSA STARS, the Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section of ALA's Reference and User Services Division www.ala.org/ala/rusa/rusaourassoc/rusasections/stars/rusastars.cfm.

This no-charge workshop will help you understand the "why" behind interlibrary loan — the community you're a part of and your responsibilities to that community as a borrower and a lender. Copyright, standards and other resources will also be discussed.

Who should attend: Resource Sharing staff responsible for setting resource sharing policies, entering reciprocal agreements, making decisions about end-user services, interacting with collection development or overseeing resource sharing.

Whether you're new to resource sharing or you've been providing service for years, this is a chance to reconsider your operation, rethink your approach and be a full participant in the resource sharing community.

    To register, visit http://www.incolsa.net/WebCal/eventreg.html?EventID=2740&CALid=5583.

Jewish Mythology Focus of NetLibrary eBook for November

The November NetLibrary eBook of the month is the winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Reference — Tree of Souls: The Mythology of Judaism by Howard Schwartz, renowned collector and teller of traditional Jewish tales and professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Schwartz provides readers with the first anthology of Jewish mythology in English, this mythical tradition is as rich and as fascinating as any in the world.

Drawing from the Bible, the Pseudepigrapha, the Talmud and Midrash, the kabbalistic literature, medieval folklore, Hasidic texts and oral lore collected in the modern era, Schwartz has gathered together nearly 700 of the key Jewish myths. Read about Adam's diamond and the Land of Eretz (where it is always dark), the fall of Lucifer and the quarrel of the sun and the moon, the Treasury of Souls and the Divine Chariot. Discover new tales about the great figures of the Hebrew Bible, from Adam to Moses; stories about God's Bride, the Shekhinah and the evil temptress, Lilith.

For each myth, he includes extensive commentary, revealing the source of the myth and explaining how it relates to other Jewish myths as well as to world literature (for instance, comparing Eve's release of evil into the world with Pandora's). For ease of use, Schwartz divides the volume into 10 books: Myths of God, Myths of Creation, Myths of Heaven, Myths of Hell, Myths of the Holy Word, Myths of the Holy Time, Myths of the Holy People, Myths of the Holy Land, Myths of Exile and Myths of the Messiah.

The eBook of the Month showcases new and noteworthy titles available from NetLibrary. Each month, NetLibrary selects a new featured title and provides free, unlimited access through the authenticated homepages of more than 15,000 public, academic and special libraries. To help libraries promote the November eBook of the Month, NetLibrary has developed a tool kit of free promotional resources that includes print-on-demand bookmarks, a sample press release and electronic support materials. More information is available at http://library.netlibrary.com/eBookOfTheMonthResources.aspx?ekmensel=20_submenu_42_link_2.
