January NetLibrary eBook Examines Job Dissatisfaction

In NetLibrary's eBook of the Month for January, The Three Signs of a Miserable Job, readers discover how to improve their job satisfaction and performance.

In his sixth fable, bestselling author and business guru Patrick Lencioni, takes on a topic that almost everyone can relate to — the causes of a miserable job. Millions of workers, even those who have carefully chosen careers based on true passions and interests, dread going to work, suffering each day as they trudge to jobs that make them cynical, weary and frustrated. It is a simple fact of business life that any job, from investment banker to dishwasher, can become miserable.

Through the story of a CEO turned pizzeria manager, Lencioni reveals the three elements that make work miserable — irrelevance, immeasurability and anonymity — and gives managers and their employees the keys to make any job more fulfilling.

As with all of Lencioni's books, this one is filled with actionable advice you can put into effect immediately. In addition to the fable, the book includes a detailed model examining the three signs of job misery and how each can be remedied. It covers the benefits of managing for job fulfillment within organizations — increased productivity, greater retention and competitive advantage — and offers examples of how managers can use the applications in the book to deal with specific jobs and situations.

The eBook of the Month showcases new and noteworthy titles available from NetLibrary. Each month, NetLibrary selects a new featured title and provides free, unlimited access through the authenticated homepages of more than 13,000 public, academic and special libraries. NetLibrary has developed a tool kit of free promotional materials that can be downloaded and personalized for your library.

OCLC to Conduct Publisher ONIX Metadata Pilot Project

OCLC will conduct a pilot project to explore the capture, use and enhancement of ONIX (ONline Information EXchange) metadata from publishers and vendors in WorldCat. OCLC hopes the pilot will result in ongoing processes for the early addition of new title metadata to WorldCat and enhanced quality and consistency in such metadata.

ONIX is a standard format used by publishers to distribute electronic information about their books to wholesale, e-tail and retail booksellers, other publishers and anyone else involved in the sale of books. ONIX is maintained by the BISAC (Book Industry Standards and Communications) Metadata Committee. For more information, see the Book Industry Study Group Web site.

The pilot, scheduled to begin in January 2008, involves public and academic libraries and a variety of publishers and vendors. Participants will be announced as the project gets under way. Please see OCLC's Next Generation Cataloging Web pages for additional details.

December WorldCat Selection Enhancements

OCLC installed several enhancements to the WorldCat Selection Service on December 9. OCLC's WorldCat Selection allows selectors of new materials at your library to view notification records from multiple materials vendors in one central comprehensive system.

In addition to improving system response time, other enhancements include:

  • New FirstSearch Link — Selectors can now click a link to display the WorldCat record in FirstSearch. This option must be set by your Administrator.
  • Automatic List Displays — If a folder includes over 1000 records, the system displays the newest 1000 records in the folder. Previously, the oldest 1000 records were displayed.
  • Automatic Deletion of Records — Records in the Rejected folder will now be deleted from the system after 14 days if all selectors have taken action on the record.
  • Duplicate Notification of Records — Under Administration, My Institution, administrators can turn on an option to automatically remove duplicate notification records for all selectors.

For more information on enhancements, visit the OCLC Web site.

Controlling Genre Headings Available in Connexion Browser

In September 2007, the Library of Congress implemented the distribution of Genre authority records (x55 tags). These records have been available for searching and/or browsing via the OCLC Connexion client (2.0) or browser.

Following the successful Connexion installation of December 9, 2007, users of Connexion browser now can control genre headings tagged 655, second indicator zero (0).

The ability to control genre headings (tagged 655, second indicator 0) will be available in the 2.10 release of the Connexion client, tentatively scheduled for release in late December 2007.

There are some restrictions regarding the controlling of genre headings:

  • If a heading is not tagged as a 655, second indicator 0, but the text were to match an established heading in a genre authority record (i.e., Buddy films), a multi-control window will open rather than automatically changing the tag and controlling the heading.
  • Likewise, if a heading were tagged as a 655, second indicator 0, but the text were to match an established subject and/or name heading(s) represented by one or multiple authority records (i.e., Baskets $z Ohio), a multi-control window will open rather than automatically changing the tag and controlling the heading.
  • Genre headings tagged as 655, second indicator 0 will be included in a 'Control All' command. If the tag/text of a correctly tagged genre heading matches an established genre authority record, the heading will be automatically controlled.

Please contact Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) or Bethany Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) with any questions.

OCLC Loading LC Records for Popular Music Sound Recordings

Beginning later this month, OCLC will begin loading additional records distributed by the Library of Congress for Encoding Level 3 popular music sound recordings. LC staff derive much of the data for these records from the All Media Guide, verifying titles and standard numbers. Contents notes are also verified to be accurate with what is on the label, but may not conform strictly to the rules.

The records generally lack added entries, subject headings and LC classification numbers. Also, the records frequently lack main and added entries for performers, although a 5XX field for performers is usually present.

Therefore, since searching in the name indexes will seldom retrieve these records, keyword searches for names will be more effective. Title searches will also often be a useful search strategy. The records will have Encoding Level (MARC leader 17) value 3 and a note that says Brief record.

OCLC processing will attempt to match these LC abbreviated-level records to records already input into WorldCat. If a match is found, some data from the LC record, such as LCCN, will be merged into the WorldCat record. The LC record will not replace the WorldCat record. Records that do not find a match will be added to WorldCat.

Because the records will have Encoding Level 3, OCLC member library cataloging staff with a full-level authorization number are able to modify and upgrade them, and OCLC encourages staff to do so. If the record is upgraded to a higher encoding level, be sure to delete the Brief record note. Should one of these records be upgraded to an Encoding Level K or I, a minimal-level upgrade credit will be received.

Please contact Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) or Bethany Levrault (blevraul@bcr.org) with any questions.

Proposal to Make MARC 21 Bibliographic Field 440 Obsolete

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has submitted a proposal to make field 440 (Series Statement/Added Entry — Title) obsolete in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format. The proposal is detailed in MARC Discussion Paper No. 2008-DP02.

Proposed practice would be to record the series statement in field 490, and if access to the series is to be provided, the added entry should be recorded in one of the series added entry fields in the 8XX grouping.

The Library of Congress and the Library and Archives Canada serve as the maintenance agency for the MARC 21 formats for bibliographic, authority, holdings, classification and community information data for MARC 21 users and will organize consideration of the proposed change in coding. Information of the maintenance and development of MARC is on the Library of Congress MARC Development Web site.

ALA 2007 CONTENTdm Presentations on Video

Three CONTENTdm presentations from the 2007 ALA Annual Conference are now available on the OCLC website.

In two of the presentations, speakers from Gulf Coast Community College and the University of Louisville explain how they created a digital library for their libraries using CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software. Both presentations are very useful for anyone just starting to build their digital library. The third presentation is a short overview of CONTENTdm.

  • Gulf Coast Community College's Memory Project
Matt Burrell and his team at Gulf Coast Community College had virtually no archival/digitization experience, but with a little bit of education, a lot of hard work and the help of CONTENTdm, they produced an impressive collection to commemorate the college's 50th anniversary.

  • University of Louisville Digital Collections
As the new Digital Initiatives librarian, Rachel Howard was responsible for consolidating online access to the digitized archives at the University of Louisville. So she turned to other members of the CONTENTdm user community to help her library get most out of their investment.

Marcadia Cataloging Service Relaunched

As part of the recent merger with RLG, OCLC and Backstage Library Works have relaunched the Marcadia Cataloging service, and they will now supply records from OCLC WorldCat. Previously, the service provided records from the RLG Union Catalog.

The Marcadia automated cataloging service uses copies of brief records transmitted via FTP to search OCLC WorldCat using a customized profile specifically created for a library. Libraries usually receive files of full MARC records for these items in 72 hours or less. The service does not include setting holdings in WorldCat for the items.

Backstage Library Works staff and OCLC staff will be available at ALA Midwinter on Monday, January 14, 1:30-3:00 p.m., to discuss the relaunch of the Marcadia Cataloging service.

For information about Marcadia, visit the Marcadia Web site. Marcadia is part of the OCLC's Vendor-Prompted Cataloging services.

Major Enhancements to Oxford University Online

Oxford University Press (OUP) has just completed a major expansion of its largest online reference product, Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO). Now, for the first time, the majority of OUP's scholarly monographs will be published online as well as in print. The number of full-text titles available in the database has grown to 1,815 books in 13 subject areas.

This online resource now includes modules in the subject areas of biology, business and management, classical studies, history, linguistics, literature, mathematics, psychology and physics in addition to the existing subject modules of political science, philosophy, religion and economics and finance. Users can be assured of the quality and accuracy of OUP's products — all academic titles published by OUP are extensively peer reviewed and approved for publication by a board of leading academics from Oxford University.

New features include:

  • Unlimited access and comprehensive coverage in the 13 key disciplines making classic works of scholarship, together with newly-published works, more accessible than ever before.
  • The addition of more than 450,000 book pages and in excess of 200 million words.
  • The addition of 400 books each year, along with regular updates three times a year.
  • Keywords and abstracts at both book and chapter level with the vast majority written by the original author.
  • Comprehensive and consistent structure — every title has a home page with abstracts at book and chapter level and full bibliographic information.

Trials for all 13 modules are now available. This resource is available either as perpetual access or as a subscription.

For product and subscription details, visit BCR's OUP Web pages. Questions? Contact Chris Cook (ccook@bcr.org).

Working with SCIPIO Records in Connexion: New Tutorials

Two online tutorials for anyone working with SCIPIO records in OCLC Connexion are now available. SCIPIO records in WorldCat are the result of incorporating the SCIPIO database, formerly available from the Research Libraries Group (RLG), into WorldCat during the integration of RLG into OCLC.

Connexion provides a scoped view, allowing the SCIPIO records to be searched as a separate database. The scoped view enables you to use new, SCIPIO-specific indexes in addition to the standard WorldCat indexes for finding SCIPIO records only. The new indexes were implemented to provide current SCIPIO users with familiar search methods.

All Connexion catalogers can retrieve SCIPIO records using standard WorldCat indexes or SCIPIO-specific indexes and can also select the option to search for SCIPIO records only.

The tutorial for the browser can be found at www.oclc.org/support/training/connexion/browser/tutorial/htm.

The companion tutorial for the client can be found at www.oclc.org/support/training/connexion/client/tutorial/default.htm.

SCIPIO: Art and Rare Book Sales Catalogs is the only online union catalog of auction catalog records in existence. SCIPIO records describe art auction and rare book catalogs for sales from the late sixteenth century to scheduled auctions not yet held. Records include the dates and places of sales, the auction houses, sellers, institutional holdings and titles of works.

Additional information regarding SCIPIO records can be found at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/connexion/client/cataloging/SCIPIOformatsandstandards.pdf.
