OvidSP Platform Enhancements Include MARC Record Download

Ovid has completed a number of enhancements to its OvidSP platform, giving users the ability to download MARC records, export search result annotations, access non-English translations, and more.

Users will be happy to discover that MARC records will now be available for download for any journal or book subscription from the Browse Books and Browse Journals pages, just by selecting Download MARC Records and following the wizard instructions.

Additional enhancements include:

  • Annotation Expert — instantly export search result annotations to standard bibliographic managers such as RefWorks.
  • Search Screen position — the search screen will no longer immediately "jump" search results to the top of the page, and the search box now appears above the results.
  • Results Manager enhancements — users will no longer need to scroll to the top of the Results Manager to access Actions as this now appears at the bottom of the page.
  • Remove Duplicates — this button has been moved outside the Search History box.
  • Inline Abstract Navigation — provides improved functionality and usability.
  • Non-English Translations — French, German and Spanish interfaces are available. A non-English interface can be viewed from either the Database Selection page or the Main Search page.

RDA/MARC Working Group Established

On March 13, the formation of an RDA/MARC Working Group was announced on the website of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) for Development of RDA (Resource Description and Access).

The posting included the following:

Under the auspices of the British Library, the Library and Archives Canada and the Library of Congress, an RDA/MARC Working Group has been established to collaborate on the development of proposals for changes to the MARC 21 formats to accommodate the encoding of RDA data. With the implementation of RDA anticipated for late 2009, the Working Group will be drafting proposals for review and discussion by the MARC community in June 2008.

Although the MARC 21 formats support the encoding of descriptions created according to a wide range of content standards, the close relationship between AACR and MARC 21 has contributed to the efficient exchange of information among libraries for decades. The RDA/MARC Working Group will identify what changes are required to MARC 21 to support compatibility with RDA and ensure effective data exchange into the future.

Members of the RDA/MARC Working Group are:

    • Everett Allgood (New York University and CC:DA Liaison to MARBI)
    • Corine Deliot (British Library)
    • Rebecca Guenther (Library of Congress)
    • Bill Leonard (Library and Archives Canada)
    • Sally McCallum (Library of Congress)
    • Marg Stewart (JSC Liaison to the RDA/MARC Working Group)
    • Martha Yee (UCLA Film and Television Archive)

Next College of DuPage Teleconference Examines Library Trends

Mark your calendar for the final College of DuPage Soaring to Excellence teleconference, "Trends, Fads or Folly: Spotting the Library Trends That Really Matter," April 11, 12 noon-1:30 p.m. ET.

Join speakers Tom Peters, CEO of TAP Information Services and Lori Bell, Director of Innovation at the Alliance Library System, explore patron-created folksonomic cataloging (del.cio.us, LibraryThing and the new breed of OPACs); libraries and librarians in virtual environments (Second Life); and using social networks (MySpace and Facebook). Discover for yourself whether these activities are "trends, fads or plain old folly," and perhaps answer the central question being considered in this teleconference — "To what extent do libraries need to quickly adopt new technologies into their programs?" or "Just because you can do it, does that mean that you should?"

BCR member libraries have several ways to access the teleconference, but everyone should register. Complete the BCR Teleconference Registration form, making sure to indicate how you anticipate viewing the teleconference and checking off the April 11 session. Additional information, including viewing sites in your state, is listed on the BCR teleconference Web pages.

The 2007-2008 College of DuPage teleconference season concludes with the May 9 Library Challenges and Opportunities program, "Tools of Engagement: Attracting and Engaging Library Users." The session takes a look at what the most creative libraries are doing to engage current and potential users of the library.

Oxford Reference Online: Premium Update

The Premium Collection also has been updated with the addition of three new timelines, Settlements of North America, The American Revolution and The American Civil War. Oxford Digital Reference Shelf (DRS) Update
Two new references have been added to Oxford's Digital Reference Shelf.

  • The Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History — Discover the experiences of women throughout history in a far-reaching, four-volume work. Although there has been extensive research on women in history by region, no other text or reference work has comprehensively covered the role women have played throughout world history. The work compiles more than 650 biographies of influential women and 600-plus topical articles covering geography and history, culture and society, organizations, movements and gender studies.
  • Black Women in America — This classic, award-winning reference work breaks new ground pulling together all of the research in this vast but under-represented field to provide the most comprehensive resource in Black Women's studies. With more than 335 biographies and 500-plus images, Black Women in America, second edition, celebrates the remarkable achievements of black women throughout history, highlights their ongoing contributions in America today and covers the new research the first edition helped to generate.

People, Action, Noise: The Rebranding of BCR

BCR is the nation's oldest and most established multistate library cooperative. Since 1935, the BCR team has helped libraries learn new skills, reach new customers, increase productivity and save money. As BCR nears its 75th anniversary, we decided it was time for a face-lift.

The new brand identity is a comprehensive makeover, including logo, mission, tagline, colors, Web site and message. We spent a lot of time determining what our members need from us, and we took that knowledge and reshaped our identity to reflect it. We want to focus on what we can offer our members to help them stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology, trends and the latest developments in the field.

Our hope is that the new brand identity will help us reach out to more libraries and in turn will help them reach further into their community. The goal is to live up to our mission: to bring libraries together for greater success by expanding their knowledge, reach and power. We want to help our members engage their patrons and increase their impact within their local communities.

We are excited to share the new and improved BCR with you. For a first look, check out our new Web site at www.BCR.org. We look forward to providing the same great products and services to our members, and we hope our new identity will help you bring more people, action and noise to your library.

If you would like more information about the project, or are interested in launching a new brand identity for your organization, be sure to join us for a Free Friday Forum about the rebranding on March 7. Hosted by Gillian Harrison, BCR's Marketing and Support manager, this session will focus on BCR's journey through the branding process and will provide ideas for you to launch a similar effort within your organization.

Reference Renaissance Conference: Call for Session Proposals

Rumors of the "death of reference" have been greatly exaggerated! And to prove it, BCR (Bibliographical Center for Research) and RUSA (Reference and User Services Association), a division of ALA, are cosponsoring A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends, in Denver (Colorado), August 4-5. Session proposals are now being accepted.

A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends will explore all aspects of reference and information services in a broad range of contexts, including libraries and information centers, in academic, public, school, corporate and other special library environments. This two-day conference will incorporate the multitude of established, emerging and merging types of reference service, including both traditional and virtual reference. It presents an opportunity for all reference practitioners and scholars to explore the rapid growth and changing nature of reference, as an escalating array of information technologies blend with traditional reference service to create vibrant hybrids.

Call for Submissions
Submissions of papers, panels and workshop proposals are welcomed that analyze issues, identify best practices, advance organizational and technological systems, propose standards and/or suggest innovative approaches that will reveal as well as invent the future of reference in this exciting and unfolding landscape. The conference will be organized around the following interest tracks:

  • Virtual Reference
  • Innovative Service Models
  • Managing Reference Services
  • Approaches, Values and Philosophy of Reference Services
  • Wild Card track featuring the most innovative service ideas
  • Vendor demonstrations of new products and services

Submissions are due April 4, and should be sent to program chair Marie L. Radford (mradford@scils.rutgers.edu). More details are available at the conference Web site.
