WorldCat.org Service Enhancements

As of November 2, OCLC will have completed installation of the following enhancements to the WorldCat.org service. Improvements include the ability to track lists, more evaluative content, updated profile design for better usability and more.

WorldCat profile redesign — The profile design updates improve the look and feel of the page and make it easier for the user to find and manage things they've done on WorldCat — and to view other users' WorldCat activities via their public profile view.

List watching — Users may track updates on interesting lists created by other WorldCat users.

weRead reviews and related items — More evaluative content provided for users to determine if this is the library item they are looking for.

Enhanced login process — An unauthenticated user opting to perform an action on WorldCat.org that requires login will be prompted by the system, at that point where needed, to login and will remain at the location in their work flow.

Editions page enhancements — Metadata has been moved into columns to make identifying the differences between editions much simpler. Also, a user will have the ability to add editions to lists.

Move all subjects into top level item metadata, removing Subjects tab — Subjects, which used to appear under the Subjects tab now all appear in the top level metadata with the rest of the subjects. Long lists of subjects will be hidden under a collapsible window which can be opened to view them. This removes a usability issue with Subjects appearing in multiple parts of the detailed record view.

Dial-A-Book excerpts added — Parts of the full text of items will be made available via a pop-up window. These excerpts are provided by Dial-A-Book. The link to them will appear in the Get It section on WorldCat.org and under the cover art on WorldCat Local.

Reference Renaissance Print Proceedings To Be Published

By all measures, the Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends conference, held in Denver (CO) this past August, was an unparalleled success. Nearly 500 attendees from five countries and 41 U.S. states attended. Conference presentations now are available, and a print collection of proceedings is scheduled to be published in 2009. Plans are underway for a 2010 conference.

All conference presenters have been invited to submit research papers and reports from the field. These will be peer reviewed for selection for print proceedings to be published by Neal-Schuman Publishers and edited by Marie L. Radford and R. David Lankes. Publication is scheduled for mid-2009.

For anyone who was unable to get to all the sessions they wanted or would like more information, links to presentation materials are now available for download in the detailed schedule on the Reference Renaissance website. As one conference attendee pointed out, "…there were so many great sessions that they frequently competed with each other, so I had some tough decisions to make."

With the success of this year's conference, BCR has committed to sponsoring a second Reference Renaissance conference tentatively scheduled for August 2010. Watch the BCR website for date and registration announcements.

Britannica's Blog Provokes Thought on Web 2.0 in the Classroom

Britannica's new blog forum, Brave New Classroom 2.0, examines whether technology in the classroom is a bane or boon to both students and teachers. It features postings on topics from the pervasive use of all things electronic in the post-secondary student population to the dumbing down of education in the K-12 population to the possibility that Web 2.0 technology may actually have a positive impact, and more.

The Britannica website points out that,

School isn't what it used to be. Today students at every level, from grade school to grad school, are living through dramatic changes in how they learn, thanks to new digital technologies. PCs, laptops, the Internet, whiteboards, PowerPoint, and other high-tech devices, once considered educational aides for the library, the media lab, and the home, are increasingly a central part of the classroom curriculum itself. The effects have yet to be fully understood.

The new classroom is about information, but not just information. It's also about collaboration, about changing roles of student and teacher, and about challenges to the very idea of traditional authority. It may also be about a new cognitive model for learning that relies heavily on what has come to be called "multitasking." Many educators are thrilled by the prospect while others are wary about the power of educational technologies to distract students and fragment their attention.

Do the new classroom technologies represent an educational breakthrough, a threat to teaching itself, or something in between? To explore the question intelligently we've asked several experts on educational technology to join us this week for a forum on the subject at the Britannica Blog.

Participants include anthropologist Michael Wesch; Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation; Steve Hargadon, founder of the Classroom 2.0 social network; cognitive psychologist Dan Willingham; and David Cole, a Georgetown University law professor who has banned laptops from his lectures. Commentaries from John Seely Brown, Joyce Kasman Valenza, Kathy Ishizuka, Karin Chenoweth and others are included, as well.

Access Britannica's main blog website for other discussions. For questions or additional information BCR's about partnership with Britannica, contact Chris Cook (ccook@bcr.org) at BCR.

Oxford Adds Features to African American Studies Center

With 600 new biographies and new editorial features, the most recent update to the Oxford African American Studies Center (AASC) combines depth of content and resources to create the most comprehensive collection of scholarship available online that focuses on the lives and events that have shaped African American and African history and culture.

New Biographies
An additional 600 biographies have been added from the African American National Biography, produced in conjunction with the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, and edited by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham. These include the celebrated singers Roberta Flack and Gloria Gaynor, actor Morgan Freeman, professional football coach Tony Dungy and more. Also featured in this update are the lives of many lesser-known persons, such as Lester Blackwell Granger, social worker and former leader of the National Urban League; famed Haitian dancer and choreographer Jean-Léon Destiné; and Anna Madgigine Jai, a West African slave who later became a plantation owner in the early 1800s.

New Editorial Features
October introduces a new Guest Scholar feature on AASC. This month, guest scholar Steven Niven, executive editor of the African American National Biography and the forthcoming Dictionary of African Biography, discusses presidential candidate Barack Obama and his story in relation to the history of Civil Rights activism. Also available is a dispatch from Editor in Chief Henry Louis Gates, Jr., titled "Forty Acres and a Gap in Wealth," in which he examines possible causes for the increasing discrepancy in wealth within the African American population.

Feature of the Month
Each month the editors of the Oxford African American Studies Center provide insights into topics of current and historical relevance. This month's feature, "Blacks in Politics, Part 1," highlights the African American pioneers in the political world, leading up to and including current presidential candidate Barack Obama. In addition to a photo essay and featured commentary, the editors have also provided a list of articles to guide readers who want to learn more.

BCR Brings Opportunities to Learn at CAL Conference

BCR invites you to experience and share new opportunities for growth at the Colorado Association of Libraries annual conference, being held this year at the Marriott Denver Tech Center. Join your colleagues November 6-8 to discover the wide variety of new tools and standards and the impact these are having within the library community.

BCR staff and associates are presenting three workshops during the meeting, focusing on the conference theme, Communities and Libraries. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the newly revised Western States Digital Imaging Best Practices, social catalogs and developments in preservation right here in Colorado.

Using Best Practices to Create Communities — Leigh A. Grinstead, BCR's CDP program coordinator, and Jamie Seemiller, program administrator, Denver Public Library Western History and Genealogy Department (Friday, November 7, 10:15 a.m.)

With the recent revision of the Western States Digital Imaging Best Practices comes the opportunity to take a new look at the way archives and libraries plan and implement digitization projects to bring new content to their communities. This session will focus on what's new in the world of best practices for digital imaging and how these standards are useful in implementing digital programs such as the IMLS funded project, "Creating Communities: Digitizing Denver Historic Neighborhoods."

Social Catalogs and the Library: LibraryThing, Shelfari, WorldCat.org and More — Linda Gonzalez, BCR member services librarian (Friday, November 7, 1:45 p.m.)

Never before have book lovers been able to share their passions so widely, so publicly. Online services such as LibraryThing, Shelfari, WorldCat.org and others enable anyone with web access to create and share lists of their favorite books and more. Users may write reviews, provide their own "tags" for resources (folksonomy) and take advantage of others' recommendations. We'll explore some of these services, and how libraries have used them to engage patrons with the catalog. Anyone with an interest in how patrons use the library catalog is welcome.

New Developments for Preservation in Colorado: SRMA, WESTPAS, IMLS and BCR — Liz Bishoff, BCR, director, Digital and Preservation Services, and Carl Stewart, University of Colorado Boulder Libraries Preservation Department (Saturday, November 8, 10:45 a.m.)

Tornadoes, fires, floods and more subtle threats are real dangers to physical and digital collections. New opportunities exist to protect our collections. WESTPAS is offering free emergency consultation and planning workshops to Colorado's libraries. IMLS is funding statewide planning grants for preservation. BCR has established a division to address digital AND preservation services. How can Colorado take advantage of these programs and what are the benefits for our libraries, local history collections and archives?

BCR Exhibit Booth
Visit BCR staff at exhibit booth #129. Chris Cook, product support specialist, and Jay Ford, library services consultant, will be available to discuss the newest BCR products, as well as provide information in our traditional service areas.

OCLC Enhances eSerials Holdings Service with MARC Record Delivery

The OCLC eSerials Holdings service now offers a MARC record update option available on a subscription basis. Each month, this optional service will automatically deliver updated MARC bibliographic records representing the holdings set in WorldCat, automatically synchronizing a library's online public access catalog with WorldCat.

The eSerials Holdings service automates the process of setting and maintaining holdings for ISSN-based electronic serials in WorldCat without adding to a library's cataloging workload. It provides up-to-date serials holdings for users and a simple, efficient work flow for staff with higher fill rates and faster turnaround times for interlibrary loan and document delivery. The service debuted in July 2006 and uses the OCLC knowledgebase of eSerials to keep WorldCat informed of full text available electronically via aggregated databases and individual eJournals.

Nearly 400 libraries are enrolled in the service, which TDNet, EBSCO, WorldCat Link Manager and Serials Solutions also offer to their clients. To date libraries and vendors have added more than 4.5 million library holdings for electronic journals.

BCR's CDP Celebrates 10th Anniversary

BCR's CDP, the nationally recognized digitization collaborative, celebrates 10 years of access, training and service to the cultural heritage community. From its origins as the state-based Colorado Digitization Project, BCR's Collaborative Digitization Program (CDP) has become a model for creating digital access to the cultural, historical and scientific heritage collections of the West by building collaboration between archives, historical societies, libraries and museums.

During the last 10 years, the foundation of BCR's CDP evolved from the premise that Colorado's archives, libraries, museums and historical societies could collaborate to share their unique resources and special collections through digitization. This type of cultural heritage collaboration had never been attempted in the U.S.

In 1999-2001 CDP received the first of many state and federal grants. This IMLS grant allowed the CDP to establish regional scan centers, develop a robust training program, consulting services and a grant program that supported digitization of cultural heritage holdings. In 2001, the CDP was expanded beyond Colorado through the Western Trails project, bringing Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and Utah cultural heritage institutions into the collaborative.

In April 2007, the CDP merged into BCR. "The merger of the CDP and BCR has resulted in new initiatives such as collaboration with the Colorado-Wyoming Association of Museums on a 2008 IMLS Connecting to Collections grant proposal," noted Brenda Bailey-Hainer, BCR President and CEO.

Today, the CDP is part of BCR's Digital and Preservation Services unit, offering training and consulting services along with products and services that support libraries' and cultural heritage institutions' digital programs. New content is being added to Heritage West on a regular basis, and BCR is partnering to submit grants that will advance digital and preservation programs in member organizations. Continuing with the CDP's tradition of collaboration and outreach services, BCR's CDP program offers best practices and resources for anyone developing their institution's digital collections.

Access to the resources created by the CDP members and participants is sustained through the expanding Heritage West database. In addition to increasing access to these unique resources, the CDP also has explored opportunities for incorporating digital primary source materials into classroom instruction. Today, there are more than 130 lesson plans for K-12 teachers available through BCR's CDP website.

"After more than a decade, the CDP continues to offer libraries and other cultural heritage institutions across the West and the nation, access to tools that support their work in creating digital content as well as examples for how to incorporate digital content into teaching and learning," commented Liz Bishoff, director, Digital and Preservation Services, BCR.

For more information, contact BCR's Liz Bishoff (lbishoff@bcr.org), director, Digital & Preservation Services, or visit BCR's CDP web pages.

Libraries that subscribe to BioOne.1, but have not yet purchased BioOne.2, are encouraged to take a second look. Since its 2007 launch this collection has grown both in size and in must-have, ranked content, adding 17 additional titles, with 18 more ISI-ranked during that period.

Events covered include the curriculum-oriented geopolitical events of the era — from the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War in 1973 to the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. Essays also address important social and cultural developments in daily life, such as:

  • Major literary movements
  • Significant developments in the arts and motion pictures
  • Trends in world population
  • Immigration and landmark social legislation.

The definitive historical reference of the late 20th century, this six-volume edition also includes keyword lists of contents, quotations from primary source documents and more than 500 photographs, maps and other illustrations of battles, buildings, people, spacecraft and other iconic images of the period.

About the Great Events series
Salem Press' Great Events series is a far-reaching view of history, organized around significant events. It is ideal for public libraries and undergraduate colleges and is widely used in high schools for specific curriculum support. Librarians and reviewers alike praise this series for its breadth of content and extended essays. Articles are typically 1,500 words, bridging the gap between full-length, scholarly studies and the shortened forms found in encyclopedias.

The eBook of the Month showcases new and noteworthy titles available from NetLibrary. Each month, NetLibrary selects a new featured title and provides free, unlimited access through the authenticated homepages of more than 13,000 public, academic and special libraries. To access each month's eBook as well as a tool kit of free promotional materials that can be downloaded and personalized for your library, visit the NetLibrary eBook of the Month resources webpage.

Iowa School Receives Free Teen Health & Wellness Subscription

Rosen Publishing has selected North High School in Des Moines (IA) to receive a complimentary one-year subscription to its critically acclaimed online database resource, Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers. The high school sustained more than $1 million damage from the widespread flooding that impacted many areas of the Midwestern United States this past summer, and while the school was able to open on time this fall, its students, faculty and staff have had to cope with the aftermath of this natural disaster.

Roger Rosen, president of Rosen Publishing, suggested that the award of the one-year subscription be granted to North High School after hearing about the devastation following the June floods. "These teens are already feeling pressure in their lives — to succeed at school, sports, and in social situations," said Rosen. "When a natural disaster hits home, the stress level goes up for them and their families. Teen Health & Wellness will provide students and staff with all the resources they need to answer questions about their physical and mental health, and understand what those around them may be going through during this difficult time."

The teens and staff at North High School will have access to curricular support and self-help on topics including diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, mental health, diversity, family life and more. North High School's principal, Dr. Vince Lewis, thanked Rosen Publishing for the award, saying, "The online resource will enlighten our students and assist in teaching and learning in many different areas."

Teen Health & Wellness has won numerous awards, including being voted a 2007 Top 10 Digital Resource by School Library Journal and a "Must Have" Product for Fall 2008. It has been selected as one of Library Journal's Best Reference Sources of 2007 and was named Best New Product, 2007 Readers' Choice Awards by The Charleston Advisor. The database has also been honored with an EDDIE (Annual Education Software Review) Award, an Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Award, a World Wide Web Health Award and a Best Educational Software (BESSIE) Award.

For additional information on this valuable resource, please visit the BCR webpage. BCR's Chris Cook (ccook@bcr.org) will be happy to help with subscription and pricing inquiries.
