Oxford African American Studies Center Analyzes Obama Election

To mark a very special moment in our nation’s history, the Oxford African American Studies Center has been updated to commemorate Barack Obama’s groundbreaking victory in this year’s presidential election.

In a moving essay that examines President-elect Obama’s historic achievement alongside other watershed moments in African American history, Editor in Chief Henry Louis Gates celebrates and honors the undeniable impact of November 4, 2008. Read the rest of this heartwarming and moving essay on the Oxford University Press (OUP) website.

Guest scholar and Oxford African American Studies Center Editor Paul Finkelman offers his own take on Obama’s achievement in an essay titled "The First President Who Is Black." At a time Finkelman calls "the alternate universe of 2008," he comments on the impact this election and Obama’s impending presidency will have on race relations in the United States. Read the essay in its entirety.

Also new for November is the Oxford African American Studies Center’s Feature of the Month. Every month, OUP editors spotlight key subject articles, biographies, primary sources and offer new content in order to provide insight into topics of current and historical relevance. OCLC Releases Summary of WorldCat Record Use and Transfer Policy

Note: This is a correction of an earlier post (see OCLC Updates WorldCat Record Use and Transfer Policy)

OCLC is in the process of updating the Guidelines for the Use and Transfer of OCLC-Derived Records, as the information landscape has undergone vast changes since 1987 when the Guidelines were last updated. The updated policy is intended to support the widespread, non-commercial sharing of WorldCat records and encourage innovation that benefits libraries and other cultural heritage institutions, while also protecting members’ investment in WorldCat.

A summary of the new Policy for Use and Transfer of WorldCat Records is available on the OCLC website. OCLC is currently reconsidering certain aspects of the policy and will make the finalized form available in the near future. The policy is scheduled to become effective mid-February 2009, to give OCLC member libraries and other organizations time to implement any changes resulting from the update. Until that time, the current Guidelines will remain in effect.

For more information, please visit the summary page for information and a link to the frequently asked questions. OCLC anticipates frequent updates to the FAQ during the implementation period and welcomes any additions you may suggest.
