BCR, OCLC Collaboration Brings New Training Opportunities

As BCR and OCLC continue to work together in partnership, we would like to inform you about some important changes regarding how your library can participate in OCLC training offered by BCR. These changes are effective July 1, 2009, and will allow your library expanded access to OCLC training and other educational opportunities.

BCR has been certified to continue to provide OCLC training. This certification ensures that all training adheres to specific standards and maintains consistency of training objectives across all OCLC product and service areas. As an OCLC-certified training provider, BCR will make course offerings available on the BCR website (www.bcr.org/training) as well as through the OCLC Training Portal (a web-based, customer-centered resource that allows you to locate and register for courses that meet your personal learning objectives).

The OCLC Training Portal displays OCLC-certified courses from all training partners across the U.S. All of the courses listed on the Training Portal are available to anyone interested in learning more about using OCLC products and services. The Training Portal also offers new features such as bookmarking and social networking opportunities. The OCLC Training Portal will be accessible starting July 1, 2009, by visiting training.oclc.org. For questions regarding the OCLC Training Portal, call 800.848.5800 or e-mail training@oclc.org.

BCR will continue to offer nationally recognized training in all areas including cataloging, emerging technologies, metadata schemas, resource sharing and copyright, digitization and more. You can access the BCR training catalog and schedule on the BCR website or send an email to training@bcr.org for more information.

Need to Contact BCR? Here’s How!

BCR is updating its telephone system to better serve our member libraries across our 11-state region and throughout the U.S. We will continue to personally deliver the outstanding service you have come to expect from BCR.

Starting July 1, when you call into the BCR main telephone number, you will be immediately connected with BCR’s newly created Support Center. From there, you will be asked to select from several options, allowing you to choose the area of support assistance you require.

  • For all questions related to ordering, invoicing, member discounts, training schedules and registration, renewals or similar issues, option #3 will be your selection.
  • For all questions related to membership in BCR or our products and services, you will choose option #4.
  • For all questions related to OCLC product support, you will be directed to contact OCLC’s Support Center.

You will also have the option of bypassing the BCR general mailbox and dialing the extension of the person you wish to speak with.

It is anticipated that this more streamlined system will help create efficiencies both in the time and effort it takes to have your questions answered by a BCR Solutions Coordinator.

We are eager to hear about your experience with our new support system. Please contact support@bcr.org with any questions or comments.

Introducing BCR’s New Centralized Support Center

Beginning July 1, BCR will offer improved member support for all products and services. The new centralized support center was created to provide quick answers to your questions, with minimal wait time.

New Solutions Coordinators are trained to quickly help with all your questions and concerns, and you will no longer need to be routed to a particular person for product-specific questions. All questions related to ordering, invoicing, member discounts, training schedules and registration, renewals and similar issues can be handled by the new support center.

Callers can be automatically routed to the new support center (no need to designate a particular person) by calling the main number (303.751.6277 or 800.397.1552) and pressing three (3) or sending an email to support@bcr.org. One of our highly trained Solutions Coordinators will be ready to answer your questions.

Also effective July 1, OCLC members should contact OCLC Customer Support for all questions related to support for OCLC products and services. In order to contact OCLC Customer Support, members should call 1.800.848.5800 or email support@oclc.org.

OCLC Customer Support is available 14 hours a day, Monday-Friday (6 a.m.-8 p.m. CT; 5 a.m.-7 p.m. MT; 4 a.m.-6 p.m. PT), to respond to inquiries and assist in troubleshooting. OCLC support staff are available to provide answers and information to help your library get the most out of your OCLC products and services. In addition to product-specific specialists, OCLC Customer Support also has a consultative group to assist with more complex issues.

BCR will continue to offer billing and ordering assistance to your library for OCLC products and services, in addition to all of the other valuable services that BCR provides. BCR will also assist OCLC in keeping member libraries informed by communicating updates, enhancements, new product offerings, research, membership reports and other important information on OCLC member benefits.

BCR's Clark Brings New Expertise to Copyright Training

Heather Clark, BCR resource sharing consultant, has been granted a Certificate in Copyright Leadership and Management from the Center for Intellectual Property, University of Maryland University College. Clark anticipates that the material she learned will bring additional insight and information into the classes and workshops she presents at BCR.

The certificate consisted of a series of seven workshops, six of which were copyright-related. Clark completed courses on the following topics:

Copyright Law and Integrated Access to Digital Course Materials — This workshop presented how an integrated approach to the various methods campuses use to provide access to digital educational course materials and how these can be used to facilitate institutional compliance with copyright law.

The Section 108 Study — With its focus on the recent Section 108 Study Group Report and its recommendations on amending Section 108 of the Copyright Act, this workshop looked at the digital revolution and how it has changed not only library practices, but how publishers and producers of copyrighted works do their work, as well as their business models for future markets and the blurring of the traditional roles of librarians and archives on one side and publishers and producers on the other.

Orphan Works — Expert attorney and public interest advocate, Gigi Sohn, looked at the need for library and cultural heritage professionals to learn more about the need for orphan works legislation; the history and background of these types of copyrighted works; and she introduced a discussion of current legislation, with its pros and cons, that aims to resolve the complex issues involved in orphan works.

Licensing Issues in Higher Education — Presented in four modules, participants were taught the basics of licensing law; ways to manage the many licenses handled by an institution; desirable and undesirable license terms; and how to assess the risk associated with those that are less than optimal.

Institutional Copyright Policy Development — Class participants were invited to explore the often-complex intersection between the worlds of copyright policy and academia, including discussions and assistance on how to evaluate whether an institution needs to develop a copyright policy; and how to answer some of the questions that flow from the process of copyright issues within the arena of higher education.

Fair Use and Balance in Copyright: The Best Practices Model — The law, best practices codes for fair use and the importance of these codes as tools for practitioners were examined, along with a historical overview of copyright and its relevance to freedom of information values and risk and risk management assessments for employing fair use.

Using its GIS mapping technology, BusinessDecision combines extensive consumer household, market segmentation and demographic data to provide small and mid-sized companies the tools they need to be competitive and prosper.

Public libraries are continually being asked to prove their value to the community. BusinessDecision was recognized by the Library Journal (April 15, 2009) as the 2008 best online reference tool in the business/economics category. Since subscribing to the BusinessDecision service in 2008, the Denver Public Library (Colorado) has reported usage numbers "...off the charts," said Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette. Awarded the Best Free Service of 2009 by Denver Westword, DeGette praised DPL, noting, "Denver PL has done an amazing job working with their business community.... They see BusinessDecision as a key resource in demonstrating to their business community that the library has real data to help them with their everyday business challenges.... BusinessDecision is helping these businesses take root and create jobs, which has earned the library recognition from members of Denver City Government." ("News in Brief." Library Hotline, May 18, 2009, p. 2)

BCR libraries have access to this and other valuable resources through their BCR membership that combines the buying power of libraries in our 11 member states. Take advantage of discounted pricing to provide these tools to your patrons and users. Contact BCR's Chris Cook (ccook@bcr.org) for additional information or visit the BCR website.
